Selling on Ebay

Does anyone know what the best ebay selling strategy is? That is, what is the best day/time to start the auction? Reserve/No reserve? etc.. Does it even make any difference?

I've always found that if you have something that people want you'll get what you want for it. I always set a reserve, with a starting bid that isn't to far from what I want for the item. And I usually get more for the item than what I wanted or expected.

Go luck...eBay selling is a whole industry in itself.

Some tips (This is what I do and it's always been successful) :

- Always make sure that your auction will finish on a saturday or sunday between 12pm and 4pm

- Always start the auction at $1.00 (most people will start at a higher price because they are scared it will end at a ridiculous price. It never ends at a ridiculous price, unless you are selling some really bad junk). The $1.00 NR (no reserve) is the best strategy in the title.

And the starting price of the auction will cost you less.

- Always mention "Mint condition" or "Excellent condition"

- Use pictures and a nice HTML layout. You will have a better chance.

- Put it in the gallery (only 25 cents) and this will also help. People want to see the stuff.

Good luck.

I sell quite alot on ebay - 2 things that bring me in the most money. Set a reserve and state what the price of the reserve is. If you are selling an item that is worth 200 or more then go ahead and pay the 19.99 to have it as featured - this brings in so much more money!

We've been selling on eBay for around a year now and trying various strategies. Here's some strategies that have helped us:

- the better quality pictures will make for a more successful auction and as the other person mentioned here (good advice), pay the 25 cents and depending on the cost of the item, consider the bolded or highlighted or featured as well. Gift icon is good too if your item is brand new and/or would make a good gift.
- describe the item honestly, do not lie about it being mint condition if it is not in *mint* condition
- learn the jargon by stopping the by ebay chat board, asking questions, and studying other listings in similar categories you want to list items in
- make sure you collect/charge enough for shipping (watch out for postage outside the continental US) and add a little bit (do not go overboard) for handling. This is a good way to snag an extra bone or few.
- use the advanced search option before listing and see what similar or the exact item you are selling went for in the auction. It is also important to analyze what category to list your items in since there are so many, many different categories.

Hope this helps ;)

heres a few more...

1) be specific about desribing condition of item. what you think "great condition" means may not be what someone else thinks. example: item is in good conditon but has a few minor scratches on one side. people do not hesitate to chargeback and/or file a complaint with ebay. and if they paid via paypal, paypal will place an immediate hold on funds and then you have to go through the dispute process, which is a hassle. i know this from experience and learned a lot of lessons.

2) If you do ever end up in a dispute, you can usually work it out with the buyer either by giving a portion of their money back or having them return the item and offering a refund. if you plan on doing a lot of selling, i'd rather lose a little money and make the buyer happy than have a negative feedback entry.

3) if you are selling anything electronic, make sure you use a disclaimer like "item is being sold as is" and what your return policy is. this is really important and does have an impact on the final selling price. the more specific you are the better. i only guarentee that item will not be "doa" (dead on arrival) and only accept returns if item is "doa". more importantly you need to be very clear about the amount of time a buyer has to return item if "doa". i will allow a 24 hour window starting from when the item was received by the buyer. the buyer has 24 hrs to contact me to report "doa" otherwise i will not accept return. i have 24hrs to contact him and respond to his issue. if problem can't be resolved the buyer must return the item within 72 hours and that doesnt mean i have to recieve the item in 72 hours, it just needs to have been shipped within that time. also, i state that item must be in same condition as received by buyer and that buyer must insure the item. if a manual refund needs to be made, i will state that refund will be made no latter than 72 hours after i receive the retuned item.

4) i have tried both "no-reserve" and "reserve" and it really depends on what you are selling. i always set a reserve for items with a value of $500 or more. if an item has a history selling within a certain proce range it doesnt matter.

good luck
