Huge wreck at Vegas Indy Car Race [Video]
Wheldon was flown to the hospital. No word on how bad he is hurt other than it is serious and might be life threatening. 3 other drivers taken to hospital. Paul Tracey said there were 20 doctors working frantically on Wheldon at the in-field med ctr before he was flown out.

I watched it happen on TV and I fear the worst :Oh crap
The actions of the broadcast lead me to believe that Wheldon sustained injury he will not survive. My prayers go out to his family and the racing community. This will be a sad day. http://www.julie-clarke.com/public_h...an_Wheldon.jpg |
They say entire top roll area of his car was sheered off. That is where his head would be! No official word as to his injuries after 90 minutes now is not a good sign. I think we may have lost Wheldon. He was just married in 2008 and has a 2 yr old kid as well as a kid born in March of this year. Very sad! Hope he makes it.

Damn, 15 out of 34 cars involved.
|
As a kid Jackie Stewart was my favorite F-1 driver. When asked why he retired at the peak of his career he said "I've done everything in racing there is to do except die" ............
. |
If that happened 5 times in one race, it still wouldn't be enough to make me sit and watch cars go around in a circle all fucking day.
|
Wow! That's one helluva crash!

Next comes the drivers meetings and now everyone has their head down and crying because the unofficial word has begun to spread. It truly is sad. I spend a lot of time at race tracks and the picture I took above of Dan was at a past Rolex 24. Racers and fans are an awesome community. They are race car drivers. They know the dangers they face. Today we face reality. |
The hang-wringing is nearly Holocaust-level hypocrisy. This is EXACTLY what white trash comes to see.
|
The drivers are out of the driver meeting and Indy Car has said the drivers will not be giving interviews. Tony Kanaan is being shown on TV balling his eyes out. Looks like we lost one today.
|
The race is over. R.I.P. Dan Wheldon!

R.I. P. |
R.I. P. Dan Wheldon, you have been one of my favorite Indy drivers for the past 10 years...im going to miss you Buddy :(
|
Not good for the charity after he took their challenge to start at the back and aim to get through to the front. Sad he has passed away :(
|
wtf? "this video is private" ... crappy post
|
Sad day but I agree with some other posters that the entire sport is boring and that these crashes are what make it interesting to many people although they would never admit it.
|
|
If you get killed in one of these races do they go ahead and give your family the trophy and say you won?
|
Just seen it on the news.RIP Dan

like i really want to watch that no thanx!

I gave up on Indycar when they split the series several years back. IMO those car are too fast to race circle tracks like they do and wrecks like Greg Moore's fatal crash as well as well as Stan Fox's crash (he lived) that prove the point.
As much as I love street course as well they are much the same as circle tracks as being far too dangerous for cars that go the speed of Indy & F1 cars. Probably the worst crash I ever saw was Jeff Krosnoff's fatal crash in Toronto back in 1996. That crash also killed one of the corner workers and showed how dangerous those temporary courses are that have next to no run off area away from the walls. Both Moore's & Krosnoff's went cockpit first into fences and they both died because of it. Granted Krosnoff's car actually somersaulted across the fencing till it hit a poll and was ripped to shreds. He probably would of died regardless if he hit cockpit first or not, because there was nothing left of his car after hitting the light poll. Stan Fox's wreck at the indy 500 was probably the worst crash I've ever seen that the driver lived and ended up barely being hurt. His legs were actually hanging out of the car when the nose of it was ripped off. I thought for certain when I watched that crash live that he was dead. Alex Zanardi was probably my fav driver in Cart and he also suffered a near fatal crash where both his legs were amputated on circle track when he hit a wall then another car ran into his chopping the nose of his car off. You rarely see those kind of crashes in F1 because with a very few exceptions like Monaco the courses are all purpose built race tracks with the required run off areas to keep the cars out of the fencing & walls. The current Indycar series has always been a how soon til a driver gets killed deal..simply because the tracks are far too dangerous. |
No as bad as getting run over by a truck and everyone passing by....
Just sayin. |
Very sad news. RIP :(
