"No society in history has ever imprisioned more of its citizens" (per head of population)

"1 in 9 black males behind bars"

"There are more 17 year old black males in prison than there are in college"

I dont really know what to say about the ridiculous nature of the US penal system, so I will leave it up to Churchill who said something along the lines of ;

"However beautiful the strategy, one should sometimes look at the reults."

The results of having paid the criminal element to breed a generation ago are prisons full of their offspring.

If you want to dig deeper, take a look at the papers written by Daniel D'Amico on the economics of the prison system.

Maybe if you had a more fair state instead of the highest difference between the rich and poor.

Also remember prisons are privately owned and judges have shares in the prisons to custodial sentences are given more freely.

If we both start with $100 and I go to a bar and spend all of my $100 and you instead use your $100 to start a business and get rich, should I afterwards complain that you have more money than me?

(caveat: I am aware of the fact that not all rich people made their fortune in an honest way, but for the sake of argument (whether or not the difference between rich and poor people is a form of injustice per se) we'll ignore that fact)

good point: people respond to incentives. The problem is that even if no direct financial incentive is involved (like owning shares in a prison), people still have an incentive to protect their own interests: example: a DA getting a high conviction rate at the cost of locking up an innocent person every now and then,...

The fact that if you start off life poor in America you have very little chance of sucess as you cant afford education is the main obstacle.

That's blaming outside factors for one's own situation. A lot of millionaires started out in their own garage, as college dropouts, without any kind of degree,...

I wonder what SB Fuller would say about this :)

Did you both miss the part about the production of goods from the prisons?? Pretty simple to me. And now its going to get worse with the prisons going private.

No... that's not a racist statement... I certainly don't understand how anyone could contrive it to be... besides... everyone knows that conservatives aren't racist.

A lot of millionaires may have started out in garages but they had an education where they cold read and write. America has the highest illiteracy of the developed nations and even higher than some of the undeveloped countries. When you have nothing and cant ever see yourself having anything then crime seems a reasonable career path.

I failed to understand this concept at all. And I couldn't disagree more.

At age 17 I had dropped out of high school and was a drug addict. I was broke, and homeless. My parents didn't help me at all. At some point I decided this wasn't the life I wanted to live, joined the Marines, and by age thirty had two college degrees. No one helped me; My father died when I was a baby and obviously my mother and I didn't get along at all. I started with nothing, I was strung on drugs, flat broke, and homeless.

Everyone has the same decisions to make, and some do better than others. But don't tell me that if you grow up poor you don't have the same opportunities. You can be dumb as fuck, drop out of high school, but at some point you have to turn around and say "This isn't working for me, I need to go to college". Anyone can go to college; No local college will turn you away. Hell, I'm still paying off my school loans.

I have no children. I do however pay more than $1,000. a month in taxes that go directly to the FREE public education system. A system that provides free transportation, a decent education and even free food if needed.

Failure to take advantage of this opportunity is a personal decision that fucks drop outs for life. But it is their decision.

I did not know that the US government paid criminals to breed.

Why did they do that ?

A generation ago - so this was a Reagan policy ?

Please enlighten me.
