US Poverty Reaches Record High And UK unemployment reaches 2.51 million

Number of Americans in poverty hits record high

The number of Americans living in poverty rose to 46.2 million last year, nearly one in six people, according to the US Census Bureau's annual report.

The 2010 data shows the poverty rate at 15.1%, from 14.3% in 2009. The number of Americans without health insurance also rose slightly to 49.9 million.

The poverty rate was the highest since 1983, and tied with the level in 1993.

The number of Americans living below the poverty line has now risen for four years in a row.

The US definition of poverty is an annual income of $22,314 (£14,129), or less for a family of four, and $11,139 for a single person.
More poor children

The Census Bureau data also showed that poverty among black and Hispanic people was much higher than for the overall US population last year - at 27.4% and 26.6% respectively.

UK unemployment total rises sharply to 2.51 million

The number of people unemployed in the UK rose by 80,000 to 2.51 million in the three months to July, official figures have shown.

This is the largest increase in nearly two years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. The jobless rate now stands at 7.9%.

Youth unemployment also rose sharply, by 78,000 to 973,000.

The total claiming Jobseeker's Allowance rose by 20,300 in August to 1.58 million.

UK unemployment figures will have recently jumped up as a lot of the people they had been hiding on Incapacity Benefit have ended up back in the counting system as they failed to qualify for its replacement.

It is all part of the plan.

The government made it easy for people to choose a life of handouts, rather than work for it, so it's no wonder we have so many workshy lazy fuckers here...

Yea but the recovery is just around the corner. I heard something about green shoots. Or maybe that was something they said a few years ago, can't remember. But you can count on the new stimulus, I mean... "Jobs Act" to fix everything, once Congress approves it, of course.

I don't think people understand how bad this is. This isn't just "bad times". This is the depression all over again. People are loosing their houses....

I hear this a lot and figures seem to indicate that it might be true, although if the depression was anything like this, then they make it sound much worse than it was.

There is work about. When things went pear shaped for me online, it took me under 2 weeks to get a job, not in MC donalds either, Im in recruitment.

I have no problem supporting somebody who has been made redundant and is actively seeking work because they want to go back to work and not be bums. I also do not have a problem with helping the people who have real disabilities and really cant work.

I have a big problem with people who won't stoop down because the wages are not high enough or the people who have been unemployed for years and just sponge of our taxes. Same goes for people who pretend to be sick all the time. I now go to work come home and then work on my sites because no way am I gonna let the sites slide after all the work iv put into them.

There is, but most are min wage, and with handouts many people make way more than min wage, so why work??

I'd prefer Phil Green to pay his tax, he's worth a lot more than a few bums on the dole.

you are right. i have a friend in the US who always thinks recovery is around the corner .... for the last three years. eventually you accept it took 40 years to get in this hole and will take as long to get out and the whole social and political systems will be redone as a result.

and it wont be a prison planet it will be a whole new world.
