anyone ever had this happen.

when going from a higher temp down to a lower temp, a few times in a day.

seems the air blowing through the vents now is not cool.

probably froze the coils

Is the pipe leading from the unit into the house covered in frost? If so, then your coils are probably frozen. Turn off the AC for an hour or so, then turn back on and all should be well. If it continues to ice up, you may need to get a repairman to come charge your system and check for leaks.

If the pipe is not frozen, make sure the fan unit is turning on as it should. If not, check your fuses. If the fuses are good and the breaker hasn't tripped but the unit still does not come on your fan may be going bad. Usually it will hum like it's trying to come on, but can't get started. To get by until you can get a repairman out to your house you can stick a pencil between the slats and give the blades a nudge to get the fan running again - this is a short term fix as the problem will just get worse until the fan locks-up.

IIf than outside is not spinning or spinning slowly, don't rush to replace the motor. It's more likely a cheap capacitor.

If it is spinning, check the two pipes attached to the outside unit.
One should be hot and the other cold. If so, the system is basically working and you don't need to replace expensive parts.

If it's 100F outside, it may be warminside even with a perfectly goods AC. If the inside is 20 cooler than the outside, the unit is working but may need cleaning.

Look at the outside unit. Is it dirty, clogged up with grass clippings? It should be hosed out from within every couple of years. Just unscrew the top grate, move it aside, and spray through the sides to clean them.

Speaking of the water hose, a little misting in the afternoon can help the AC work better when it's really hot outside.

Oh and if the indoor unit is iced over it can take SEVERAL hours for that big block of ice to completely melt. Turn it on fan only, no AC, and wait ten minutes. Them check the drip hose at the roofline. If it's dripping with the AC off, just on fan, the dripping is coming from a big block of ice melting. Wait until it stops dripping to turn the AC back on.

Frozen coils, Ive had it happen for a whole summer long, we had to get a bigger outside unit.
