U.S. Open 2011: Rivalries, comebacks and Hurricane Irene

The chief protagonists: Roger Federer, at 30, fighting time and more physical foes in pursuit of a 17th major title; Rafael Nadal, whose victory last year completed a career Grand Slam; and Novak Djokovic, on track, with a 57-2 record, for the best season in the history of the men?s game.

Serena Williams, who blazed through two tournament titles this summer after a year-long injury absence, apparently thought she had enough preparation in the middle of the Cincy event.

Maria Sharapova has won before, but can she put it all together for two weeks? She is still struggling with her serve after her shoulder surgery. But she's a fighter so don't count her out.

Vera Zvonareva is a world of ranking points behind Wozniacki, and no one is holding their breath for her to win a first Slam title without busting into tears and hysterics.

Maria Sharapova wins, Kvitova loses on Day 1 at US Open. At night, 2000-01 U.S. Open champion Venus Williams played 91st-ranked Vesna Dolonts of Russia, before 16-time major winner Roger Federer was to face 54th-ranked Santiago Giraldo of Colombia.

Early winners included No. 8 Mardy Fish, who played his first U.S. Open match as the top-seeded American and beat Tobias Kamke 6-2, 6-2, 6-1; No. 9 Tomas Berdych, the 2010 Wimbledon runner-up; No. 13 Richard Gasquet; No. 22 Alexandr Dolgopolov; and No. 27 Marin Cilic, who eliminated 19-year-old American Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (6).

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic played a mere 44 minutes to build a 6-0, 5-1 lead over qualifier Conor Niland of Ireland when he retired from the match with food poisoning. Rafael Nadal 6-3, 7-6(1), 7-5 win over Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan.

Serena Williams advanced to the second round of Flushing Meadows with a 6-1, 6-1 romp over Serbian Bojana Jovanonski in the evening session.

World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki had an easy time with N. Llagostera Vives 6-3, 6-1 but was asked about the lack of ?a big shot? and to name her new coach.

World number two Rafael Nadal and number four Andy Murray both progressed to the third round of the US Open, although in very contrasting circumstances.

Nadal was soaring with a two set lead (6-2 6-2) when Nicolas Mahut retired with an abdominal injury.

Murray, on the other hand, had to fight back from two sets down to beat Dutchman Robin Haase.

The Scot won 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 6-2 6-0 6-4 at the Louis Armstrong Stadium and will face 25th seed Feliciano Lopez in the third round.

Third seed Maria Sharapova crashed out from the tournament as Italy's Flavia Pennetta secured a shock third-round win.

The 26th seed Pannetta won 6-3 3-6 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium as Sharapova, one of the favourites for the win, failed to meet expectations.

Even if Djokovic loses one more match this season he might beat the record 82-3. It depends on how many games he plays. He has 5 tournaments counting this one and he'd have to win 26 games. That record has been in place since 1984 and even R fed couldn't break it.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic has advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open, where he will face fellow Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.

Third seed Roger Federer of Switzerland breezed into the final eight, losing just three games in a straight-set win over Juan Monaco of Argentina in a match that did not begin until nearly midnight. Federer will next face eighth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, who beat Federer in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

On the women's side, top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark lost the first set to Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, and trailed four games to one in the second set before rallying to win the match. The victory sets up a quarterfinal matchup between Wozniacki and Andrea Petkovic of Germany.

American Serena Williams also moved on to the final eight, cruising past former world number-one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4.
