What do you do with your old hard drives?

I've turned some of my old ones into external USB drives, do you destroy your old ones or are you a hoarder?

Fire? Weapons? Battery Acid?

Or do you reformat them and sell on eBay?

Bottom of the Pacific maybe?

CurrentlySober 08-27-2011 12:32 PM

I do a poo on them...

CurrentlySober 08-27-2011 12:32 PM

I like poo...

Verbal 08-27-2011 12:41 PM

I beat the shit out of them with a sledge hammer, then play with the little powerful magnets inside.

quickhosting 08-27-2011 12:49 PM

bash the &^&% out of them with a hammer myself, making sure I hear the platters crack inside :) one good shot near the motor helps.
great stress relieving technique too

V_RocKs 08-27-2011 01:14 PM

turn them into USB drives too.

candyflip 08-27-2011 01:16 PM

I have them all in a big box in my office.

ottopottomouse 08-27-2011 01:19 PM

Paul&John 08-27-2011 01:21 PM

i sell them ;)

Klen 08-27-2011 01:22 PM

I sold once 9 old hard drives,to same person over usenet.

Chosen 08-27-2011 02:50 PM

I use them :pimp

StinkyPink 08-27-2011 03:01 PM

I save all my spare parts, when I get enough to build a computer and give it to someone who can't afford it. Many old people and poor people barely use them for anything but email, facebook, mahjong, solitaire, bejeweled... whatever. I save anything over 20gb for XP installs. The computers I give away usually have a few smaller hdd in them. Sometimes 3...

If I spend money on anything to fix them, I will tack on a fee, the ones I sell are usually $150 or less... usually $100. It's a hobby.

harvey 08-27-2011 03:44 PM

If they're still usable, I donate them, otherwise just throw them to garbage

I don't have a sledge hammer readily available so I used a combination of rock boulders and fire in that order :thumbsup

L-Pink 08-27-2011 09:08 PM

Target practice.

Rochard 08-27-2011 10:37 PM

I take them apart as much as I can, smash them with a hammer, put a nail through them, and then burn them in the fireplace. Then I toss them out. Seriously. I don't want anyone poking through my old drives.

glowlite 08-27-2011 10:42 PM

I have them melted with an acetylene torch.

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 08-27-2011 10:52 PM

I keep them all (I'm planning to put them on display in my memorial museum).

I use them to update family/friends systems and keep them myself for any backups I need to do ect ect.

I find the moment you sell/give away an old part is more often then not the time you need it.

Me too. Got a lot of them that were backing up the content library that have gone down. Would love someone to re erect them for us.

My Pimp 08-28-2011 02:13 AM

I will destroy them. Do not sell them. Re-formating is not engough. There are programs that can recover your data.

Harmon 08-28-2011 02:19 AM

Drill a few holes through them and then throw them into a bucket of salt water for about a week.

there are safe ways to do that, for example by rewriting everything on the hard drive => nothing can be recovered from the previous data ;)

BIGTYMER 08-28-2011 02:34 AM

Wipe them with gov rated software.

I'm sure the gov can unwipe them with gov rated software, and if they can do it, so can someone else.

Godsmack 08-28-2011 05:17 AM

Or make a really cool clock..

Barry-xlovecam 08-28-2011 07:17 AM

Mutilate them and bury them in the crawlspace ... LOL

Vjo 08-28-2011 09:28 AM

Real simple. Take them to the trash just before the truck picks them up.

There is a one in a zillion chance anyone will ever discover them in today's garbage system.

raymor 08-28-2011 09:44 AM

When drives begin to fail, I write random data to them, then mail them to to the datacenter marked "replacement drive for Media Revenue server #1."

Yes you can use program DBAN for that, but faster way to do it and over windows would be simply writing a bogus file with matching size of entire hard drive and once it's written format drive. So if someone tries to get data back he will only get that bogus file :)

I put together computers with old parts and donate them to schools.

cooldude7 08-28-2011 12:23 PM

i do experiments with them, like dismantleing it and playing with motor and discs.

seeandsee 08-28-2011 12:37 PM

last time i had "old" one, i cant use

i opened the case, put out disc with data and destroyed it in pain

Spunky 08-28-2011 12:42 PM
