Dropbox Free or Paid

Do you pay for dropbox or use the free system

CaptainWolfy 08-21-2011 09:03 AM

i really can't find any reason for using dropbox, if i need pictures i upload them on facebook or flicker, twitpic etc, even have own imghosting, if i need documents, i upload them on google docs, and for the files there is always ftp for private servers..

AdultKing 08-21-2011 09:05 AM

i find it handy, i just finished a clients site, they run a printing house , and people send them creatives via the web, they were using ftp and the server was messing up all the time.

so i setup an ajax uploader, which sends the creatives to their dropbox, which syncs across all the sales reps desktop and mobile devices along with an email detailing the projects, its saved them loads of time.

there are two types of people, those who understand the time saving reasons to use things like dropbox especially when working in teams and those who don't.

fuzebox 08-21-2011 09:55 AM

I can see how it would be a huge time saver for specific businesses... I personally haven't found a use for it yet.

I got the free version with 10 GB but I stopped using it. I dont like that my files isn't encrypted on their servers.

AdultKing 08-21-2011 09:56 AM

We use Teams, it's invaluable and actually saves us money in the long run.

We encrypt the files that you store on Dropbox using the AES-256 standard, which is the same encryption standard used by banks to secure customer data. Encryption for storage is applied after files are uploaded, and we manage the encryption keys.
Dropbox is secure. AES-256 is about as good as it gets for this kind of service.

Free for now, but will be switching to top paid plan once I get a new laptop and start working more remotely. Really like their service!

I use Dropbox to sync company files, backup data, have access to personal data between computers, iphone, ipad or other computers via the web.

It has saved me on more than one occasion with access to ID/Passport scans, health insurance cards, bank account/wire info, etc that I can email from my phone and not have to rush home to get.

It's also great to quickly share sales docs between sales reps or promo tools to clients for my mainstream biz.

I'm still on the free version. I've referred enough people to keep getting bumped up. With every referral they give another 250MB of storage for free;-)

If you want to check it out, and get me another FREE 250MB storage - signup here: http://db.tt/z38aViH

++1 :thumbsup

It is great also for sharing documents across multiple devices. Ipad-Iphone-Laptop-PC I can access data needed to work daily.

i just checked their vid on main page, nothing new but could be good for some storage, why not

Free here - it actually is invaluable if you have more than one person working on something - you can use it kind of like source control.

We were basically building an app and while I was working on the front end design / layout another developer was working on the back end. So we built the app in a folder on dropbox and shared that folder between the two of us. It allowed us to both work on the app simultaneously (since we were both typically editing separate files).

It's also invaluable to transfer files between computers. If I'm working on something at the office and I'm about to leave for home I just throw the files into dropbox so I have them once I get home as well (or vise versa).

I'm interested in using OSX Lion's new feature that is similar to dropbox, but I've yet to upgrade to lion.
