Movie gallery anti-hotlink

Anyone know how to do that?

Protect movies (mpegs/avi) from getting hotlinked?

with the htaccess that you would use for images when you apply that for those file extensions the movies wont load properly for the people that its meant to load for neither.

You can't do it with .htaccess as far as I know....you can do it with cookies and javascript, or you could contact your host and get them to set up a renaming script for you...there are probably other ways too.

I would be interested in hearing this too. I don't do movies simply b/c they can't easily use .htaccess on them.

This topic seems to be brought up very often, it amazes me that there's no wise programmer who develop a solution.. it would mean quick bucks if it works:2 cents: :2 cents: ...

The reason there is no quick and easy solution is that the players themselves don't send the referal. So everytime realplayer or whatever views the movie it doesn't send a referal, so you don't know if it come from your site or another one. I guess you could use cookies, if the person viewed page /movies1/10.html then they have a 1 hour cookie that lets them watch movie /movies1/movie10.avi

because it is impossible - they can always paste the url into a browser.

Likewhoa has a very good anti-hotlinking script. It protects my movies which saves me a shit load.

I just keep hearing "Contact host X they have a custom solution but only for their clients...yadda yadda".. I guess other smart individuals could make such a solution too?..and sell it :)

Not necessarily true.

The cookie method involves placing a cookie on the users disk when he enters a gallery. Then a combination with htaccess will ensure that only users that have the cookie on their disk will be allowed to access a movie. That way, people that paste the url in their browsers are blocked...

It's a very good solution actually, except that it is heavy on server load, so it might not be a good idea if you can't spare the resources. Also, placing the cookie might give you a bit of a disadvantage with some of the MGPs as some dont allow it, but at least you're assured of complete protection
