More rules from big brother: Self extinguishing cigarettes.

the thing about goverments is that there will never be less rules and regulations, but more, more, more. It doesn't matter what the new rules are, it is almost always another breach in our freedom. Whether you agree with the rule or not is not the point: No rule is always better if you value your personal freedom, like you should.

The newest rule here in the Netherlands i noticed was yesterday. I was smoking a cigarette, watching a movie, just relaxing in my private life. It went out by itself in my hand. I thought huh? So a while later i smoked another one, same thing happened. Then i came to the conclusion it are crappy 'fire safe' cigarettes. I felt kind of betrayed, again, by the goddamn government. Just checked some news sites and yep, the EU pushed this down our throats without asking any of the people, like always. By november this year, every cigarette must be 'fire safe' so it is slowly being enrolled now.

The EU thinks of something, and the dutch government says, ofcourse, yes to everything, because our government is amongst the most spineless, sneaky and greedy governments in the world.

What is the problem here? Democracy and the voice of the people are completely skipped. The people only notice the change in a news article or when experiencing that new rule, like i did with this one. In both cases, it is too late because the new rule is already in effect.

BIGTYMER 08-12-2011 03:22 AM

Nice to see it's not only America controlling our every move.

kane 08-12-2011 03:22 AM

While it is the government the buckles and implements these laws it is almost always big business that is behind them. The reason there are seatbelt laws are not because the government wants to protect us, it is because the auto insurance companies wanted them so that if there is an accident the odds of serious injury go down and with that so do their potential liabilities.

Likely this is a similar thing. I'm sure some insurance company checked out a study that showed how many fires and injuries occur each year from cigarettes and they decided to get a law passed to reduce that number so they would have to pay out less.

nico-t 08-12-2011 03:41 AM

Yea i know, everything a government does is based on money. And the sneaky way of pushing these things through bothers me, i always feel more and more boxed in and betrayed. Politicians are the scum of the earth the way they lie and manipulate, and for the people that believe them I have no respect.
You know them: "It doesnt bother me so i am all for it", or "it's saver so I think it's a good idea". They dont see the big picture how their freedom is getting smaller with every new rule.

AdultKing 08-12-2011 03:52 AM

Most of us will experience cigarettes being banned from sale in our lifetimes I believe.

If the concept of a cigarette was launched today it would not be allowed to be sold, there is no way a modern Government would allow such a dangerous product onto the market.

We have had self extinguishing cigarettes by law in Australia for over 2 years. Later this year plain packaging of all cigarettes comes into force together with a new tax hike bringing the cost of some packs of 25 to $20.

TorchWood 08-12-2011 03:58 AM

Wow, that sucks, invisible chains everywhere.

Relentless 08-12-2011 04:17 AM

Wonder what chemical they use for that and how healthy it is for you to be smoking it...

as if any other part of the cigarette would be healthy to smoke :winkwink:

BlackCrayon 08-12-2011 04:47 AM

they' been doing that for years here in canada. i don't think its a law though, just something the cigarette companies started doing.

nico-t 08-12-2011 04:53 AM

no that's not true, cigarette companies dont like it, more costs to produce.

Looks like you are right. They talk about the chemicals used here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_safe_cigarette

Canada, 37 states, australia and now the EU have laws requiring this.

Sly 08-12-2011 05:25 AM

The issue I have with this law is it creates yet another chemical that users will undoubtedly inhale, will most likely be harmful to the earth, and probably have additional side effects to non-smokers.

More chemicals. Joy.

MrCain 08-12-2011 05:31 AM

I once read that the EU even regulated the shape of apples, pears, strawberries and tomatoes.

Sly 08-12-2011 05:36 AM

Quote:

Currently there are no findings published on the long term health effects on humans of inhaling EVA co-polymers. Results of tests conducted on rodents show the risks associated with 'Ethylene Vinyl Acetate copolymer emulsion based adhesive' include triggering the cellular proliferation necessary for tumor development.[4]

It should also be duly noted that burning any organic material without sufficient Oxygen increases the production of Carbon Monoxide. So, whether or not the additional added chemicals have any direct impact on long-term health, repeatedly inhaling the fumes of an Oxygen starved ember greatly increases long-term Carbon Monoxide exposure. Many of the symptoms reported by smokers are (coincidentally, or not) known side-effects of Carbon Monoxide exposure.
Weeee...

I think you'll find that is in Vic only right now. The rest haven't adopted the fire safe cigarettes just yet. Started not long after the bush fires.

nico-t 08-12-2011 05:54 AM

Yes i agree with the chemicals concern. It's astonishing that in this day and age cigarettes are becoming more harmful by government order. The world upside down.

barcodes 08-12-2011 06:00 AM

I don't think we have that in the us yet, the govt. just made them hire a graphic designer lol.

It's an Australia wide mandatory standard regulated by the ACCC.

Switch to ecigs... but don't buy a crappy one. I have now converted every single one of my friends who smoke to ecigs and every single person has quit immediately.

The trick is to get a quality ecig and find a liquid that you really like (or a bunch of them). The ProVape ProVari is by far the bet ecig and allows you to use any type of atomizer or cartomizer.

The best thing about using the ecig. I can't even stand the taste of an analog cigarette any more (AKA anal logs). Previously, when I've quit smoking (in some cases for over a year) they tasted great if I tried one again. Now I can't get past three drags without tossing it. Tastes like crap.

Seriously, buy a quality ecig and a quality atomizer. I guarantee you won't go back to smoking and it's cheaper past the initial investment, by far. It has been 100% effective with 12 of my friends. If I knew any other smokers personally, I would have converted them by now as well.

Time to switch to weed, should make the movie more interesting anyway. =]

Rochard 08-12-2011 07:33 AM

Wonder what chemical they use for that and how healthy it is for you to be smoking it...

Smoke a joint or a cigar and let it sit for a minute, it goes out... Cigarettes used to be kept burning due to paper content in with the tobacco.... Maybe they took that shit out? These cigarettes may be better for you retards who smoke them! :1orglaugh

the leading cause of house fires is cigarettes. this is a good thing.

baddog 08-12-2011 09:05 AM

If you smokers would be responsible you would not have these issues. Stop burning down your homes because you fell asleep with a cig in your hand.

What I was going to say.

Its prb. saving more lives then killing people.

JamesGw 08-12-2011 11:17 AM

That's pretty insane.

Eyeball 08-12-2011 12:08 PM

So your cancer stick went out, who gives a fuck.

People need protecting from smokers and their filthy habit. Weither it's passive smoking or the newborn baby that gets burned alive due to it's cool parents falling asleep with a fag in their mouth. If it saves a handful of innocent lives it's a worthy regulation.

cooldude7 08-12-2011 12:13 PM

i hate limitations and restrictions., :)

everything should be manual, not automatic unless i tell them to.

I want control......no matter what.

p.s. i m drunk
