Are you ready for Solar powered Mobile Phones? (PIC)

Apple's been "evaluating" whether to go solar. But based on this article, they are already looking at a supply chain. I think they are well past the "evaluation" stage. The problem I have with this idea is whether there will be any workarounds for cloudy days and will there be a boost in battery storage capacity to compensate?

Apparently whoever granted them a patent on "solar powered portable electronic device" had never heard of a calculator.

dyna mo 08-06-2011 05:31 PM

they will be releasing some very cool shit going forward, was reading about some of the patents they acquired via several billion dollars spent. these patents were along the lines of augmented reality which will explode in the very near future imo.

hat's off to apple, i don't care for their products but i am glad to see them innovating.

adult-help 08-07-2011 05:02 AM

those solar cells should be on the back of the phone so no need to carry that additional piece..

You don't think Apple invented this idea, do you?

scarlettcontent 08-07-2011 08:20 AM

I remember solar powered calculators back in the early 80s, why has it took 30 years to come up with this?

cherrylula 08-07-2011 08:22 AM

the battery companies must hate this lol...

another good question, if they can make watches waterproof, why don't they make phones waterproof?

It's summer and I already know like two people who've jumped in a pool with iphone in pocket! derp! lol

It hasn't! Appel did not invent this. This stuff has been around quite some time now.

But ofcourse, all the Apple fanfags will claim it's the best thing since sliced bread and pray to Jobs.

just like the electric car.

thickcash_amo 08-07-2011 10:50 AM

I wouldn't mind a solar powered phone as long as I can still plug it in when needed

Probably because it will need more then one cell for powering up.

Battery issues and also getting the complete unit to run on the least amount of electricity to make the phone work. I think they still have a long ways to go.

Very nice. I wish HTC would get on that bandwagon.

adultchatpay 08-07-2011 07:45 PM

Waste of time, i can recharge my phone's battery for 1-2 hrs. Then use it for 3-4 days. I don't need a solar shit and catch sunlight like crazy.

Solar calculators don't have dual core gigahertz processors and large full color displays, nor do they transit high speed data to towers miles away. Therefore, a smart phone uses roughly one thousand times as much power as a calculator. New solar cell technology is only now starting to get close to providing anything like enough power to help charge a smartphone battery without requiring a ten pound solar array.

i bought one of those, didnt work well and waste of money
