Time for a new workstation!
The current machine is getting tired, and I'm on the market for a new one.
I use multiple monitors, and I like to run complicated programs simultaneously. Budget is up to 3k. What's the ULTIMATE rig out there right now in my budget? |
i cant afford a new workstation... :(
|
what a silly quesion :)
|
What is ultimate to you? Do you game, run large databases, tons of programs, or need craploads of space?
|
ummmmmmmmmmm this is a cool one :)

What's your OS preference?

Windows 7 is working good

Bad time to buy as LGA 2011 will not be out until later this year.
I don't intend to upgrade from my 980x rig until maybe the end of Q1 2012 as there will be nothing until then that can really supercede it. |
I just got http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...892&CatId=4928 and am very impressed especially for the price ($1,600).
I run two 24" ViewSonic LED Monitors however, you can support up to 4 if you disable the crossfire feature. |
heres my advice... build your own machine and add top quality stuff, dont cheap out as you will regret it in a year.
get 2 or more quality video cards and run a nice dual/triple monitor setup. I have 3 and love it. Cooling system is key so spend some money on this and will save your machine for YEARS. get 8GB of ram and whatever HDD size you are getting, get another for internal backups. If you have the dough I would say get some solid state drives. my brother has them on his new machine, cost a fuck load but WOW that fucker is fast as shit Quote:

Right now I'm using the i7 2600k overclocked to 4.5ghz. Nice chip. Cooling is the Corsair h70 water cooler. Easy to install.
For video card I have the gtx580. Case is Obsidian with about 8 fans. 24 GB of corsair vengeance ram and a Rosewill 1000 watt poweer supply. |
Hold on, let me price something out local to me part by part, so I can relay the useless information on to you!

For 3K you can build a state of the art machine. Head over to hardforum (it's a hardware forum) and check what is hot right now and what parts you should go for.

try google

Not the ultimate rig but here is some of what I bought recently.
Motherboard: EVGA Classified SR-2 (Super Record 2) ($599) CPU: Intel Xeon X5690 Westmere-EP 3.46GHz 6 x 256KB L2 Cache 12MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 ($1670) Memory: CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 ($259) or Memory: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 24GB (6 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 ($305) Total: $2500 Spend the rest on a good video card. I guess you already have monitor and a PSU you can use. Probably need to buy a new case to fit the MB though as it needs room for 10 pci slots. Then upgrade with another CPU and memory when you need. With two Xeon processors (12/24 cores) and 48GB memory you should have hardware that last for at least the next couple of years. |
