Do you let your kids play violent video games?

I am coming under increasing pressure from my 11 year old to do so:Oh crap

L-Pink 07-19-2011 11:11 PM

Grand Theft Auto is a very good way to teach your child how to be pimp.

Time to send him to the Gym and claim back your privacy again.
11 years, they where nice and cool, but you have to accept that after a certain age, you need to keep him in the tight grip we call fatherhood. Be a roll model instead of asking the PSP to take that roll over from you.....

Deej 07-19-2011 11:30 PM

Ive been playing bloody games and watching freddy kruger shit since I was 5. Its all about upbringing and the fact that your even contemplating not letting them play them leads me to think you have a certian amount of concern for the upbringing and im sure youre on the right road. Though some are just freaky psycho killers. But if so id first look at the woman ;)

I do not have kids... but I do not think you should let them play these games alone... Do not use the Gaming console as a Babysitter.

More like PS3. He does sports. But things were different when I was growing up. At his age, I was playing outdoors much more. But here in the UK, there seems to be a collective paranoia that prevents parents from letting kids out alone.

Some of his friends at school play such games. And since they can play remotely together via the web, it could be argued that gaming nowadays is a more of social activity than it used to be.

v4 media 07-20-2011 12:16 AM

The problem is if you say no, he goes round his friends and plays them there.

I have the same problem with my 12 y/o he's asked for GTA, every year from his birthday since he was about 8, (trouble with having older cousins). Every year I say no.

The shoot up games, I don't mind him playing so much. Kids have always played shooting games, even if it's just with a finger and shouting bang.

The Dawg 07-20-2011 12:35 AM

My son (9yrs) can only play games like Sonic or other happy games. Im sure when he gets to middle school there will be a change in his game "wants".

mike|melina 07-20-2011 12:40 AM

I tend to play those games with them, it helps to ease the tension that might be involved in a game session. Otherwise they will anyway play it with their friends anyways... ;)

Cheers.

Call of Duty & Co look really violent though. Make love, not war!

PornStarToys 07-20-2011 12:58 AM

I think CoD is a perfect entry step to violent video games. It's not that violent.

:1orglaugh Cheers!
It's been a while since I had to clean my screen from spat out coffee.

As for advise, let the little man play.
If not at home he'll play it at his friends house.
And it's not the games they play or movies they watch that makes kids go bzrk, it's how you raise them.
And you sir I've known for a while now and I'm confident you're doing a great job at it.

I retain more sanity and know how than 75% of this board.

plus, I wash often... as hard and as fast as I want!

Agent 488 07-20-2011 09:20 AM

yes i want to train them to be killers in iraq, afghanistan or whatever country is being invaded at the time.

better than being in nature, creating something or using their imagination.

Choopa Phil 07-20-2011 09:22 AM

you need to get him to be active and do things make the video games an incentive. i.e you do your homework you get x amount of time, you do your chores, you get x amount of time, etc, etc. none of this hours on end playing COD till 2am and throwing tantrums when you die BS.

Lykos 07-20-2011 10:19 AM

He is still a baby, but i will try not to let him when he is older...

don't have kids but being of the generation that grew up with it, i'd say he's playing it elsewhere

best to act all indignified so he understands you disagree with the violence of the games, and perhaps demand that he only play shooter games that make him think somewhat strategically to assuage your parental nature

JamesGw 07-20-2011 10:36 AM

I was playing Doom when I was like 5 years old. I think I turned out alright.
