Hosting question

So I was just wondering (especially wms that have a lot of wp blogs) how do they host their blogs?

I am on a Linode 512 and barely hosting my mainstream wordpress blog, 5 active connections kill the box, so what do you use for hosting that much blogs? I think Hostgator and Dreamhost doesnt allow adult (or do they?) hosting.

So do you use Dedicated server for your sites? If yes how much you pay for it and do you just pay for it from your own pocket or via the income of your blogs?

If you are not sure whether you need a dedicated server then I'd make sure you go with a host that'll make it easy for you to make the transition from Virtual to Dedicated should you decide only to take a Virtual to begin with.

In my experience Webair is the best.

i use dedicated server...no more than 5-6 blogs/database...i have now more than 60 blogs
First months usually you ll pay from your own pocket. After that if you dont make money to pay for your server you do something wrong
Tim's right...choose a host that can transfer you from virtual to dedicated with no problems.
I use xxxhostit.com

I have done just that trip with Amerinoc. Started out small with a shared account, outgrew that and moved to VPS, outgrew that and upgraded to an even bigger VPS and after that moved to dedicated.

All along the way Amerinoc has been great, they have done a fair assessment of my needs and have suggested reasonable steps and done all the transfers for me.

Without them I wouldn't be able to run my business, so it's with great pride I dearly recommend them. You will find a link here below in my signature.

For the same price you have now you could get a GS account at mediatemple.net

Seriously, don't bother with any other host. Companies that host with media temple are Volkswagen, Adobe, NBC, Starbucks, etc...

It's not some fly by night or low end host like most of the suggestions you're going to get from this board.

Hit me up on my ICQ or email and we can discuss how NationalNet can help you.

Thanks

You could have a large number on a Hostgator $15 per month Unlimited Shared Account. I know as I use them for just that. They'll even do your coding for your 24/7, I don't know if they're meant to, but whenever I go to the 24/7 live support someone is there to help me.

Here's a coupon code for a discount jonno29312

The one that says Business Plan is the one I'd recommend http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml

If you try them you'll never look back. I've been with a number of poor web hosts, I won't mention them as they've had a few years to try to improve, but Hostgator are a dream!

I would have been surprised if they allowed adult.
I do agree they are one of the best hosts around for mainstream stuff.

There are plenty of good hosts on this board :2 cents:

You need to do some tuning on your linode. Check the tuning and performance section on the linode forums. I have several sites on a single linode 512 and it's screaming fast but I tweaked mysql and apache a lot.

Babaganoosh 07-19-2011 10:26 AM

Oh, and avoid hostgator, dreamhost and webair. They're all pure garbage.

icymelon 07-19-2011 10:35 AM

dont use dreamhost or hostgator and you should be ok on a virtual. webair, amerinoc. hosthead have great virtual accounts that you will be able to run a bunch of blogs on no problem. For $10 a month you should be able to cover your hosting bill.

Can anyone who says avoid Hostgator please backup their statements, otherwise it just sounds like you're the competition. I've been with them for years and they are the perfect company!

I don't work for any hosting company and never have. Hostgator sucks balls.

The servers are oversold, support is abysmal, mysql uptime is a joke. If you're just running a little site that nobody will notice some downtime then hostgator is fine. Personally, my sites matter too much to put them on hostgator. The only way I would consider hostgator is if I needed a cheap dedicated and didn't need support.

What's wrong with the support? They have live support, I never have to wait more than 1 minute, they've always been incredibly helpful. I've had other hosts who can't be contacted for 24 hours. What problem did you have with the support?

I had a customer whose sites were shut down for "high resource usage." The site was mentioned on the local news and linked to from the news station website causing a traffic spike. Hostgator ignored repeated tickets and calls until the "situation could be reviewed."

I was trying to help get the situation resolved by moving them to a new host but my customer didn't have a website backup. We were locked out of the account so we couldn't even access the files. The site was suspended for 2 full days.

Then, to top it off, when we finally got his sites moved and account canceled they charged him for another 6 months of service. Needless to say that resulted in a chargeback.

bonjurkes 07-19-2011 05:23 PM

thanks for all the links, honestly I was planning to use Hostgator or Dreamhost.

Right now I am on 512 mb VPS, only reason I want to switch to another provider is I am sick off adjusting confs which never worked very well.

I am planning to open an adult site after a long time, most likely a blog, so I dont want to have pain in the ass. Because server gets crashed in few mins and I have to be online to recover it's ass, and that may not be always possible.

Thanks for ideas, recommendations. Baboon guy, thanks for your reply also, I will do some more tweaking on my linode

The default my.cnf and httpd.conf files are crap for a small VPS. If you're using those unaltered files then your sites are in trouble already. Look into tuning-primer.sh and mysqltuner.pl. Once you run those you'll have mysql in much better shape.

query caching isn't enabled in my.cnf by default. Fixing that is one of the easiest and biggest performance boosts you'll get.

As for apache, drop MaxClients to something much lower like 30. I don't remember if keepalive is enabled by default or not. If you have it enabled, make sure KeepAliveTimeout is set pretty low. I have mine set to 2.

Honestly once you get your linode up and running the way you want it you'll be thrilled with it. I've had a 512 for about a year now and have been really happy with it. I run 5 sites from one linode.

If you're able to run your own server and I am guessing you are, take a look at securedservers.com.

You've been lurking on GFY for 5 1/2 years and decided to start an adult site now? What got you to finally pull the trigger? Is it the almost daily threads about sponsors shutting down?
