WHY are external 3TB drives are $129, internal $189?

Whyt he fuck would an external 3TB drive cost only $129 at a shit hole retail place like Bestbuy, but I can't find a decent internal 3TB drive online for less than $180?? only cheap internal 3tb are that "green" bullshit drives that are slow as ballz.

dyna mo 07-17-2011 11:12 AM

i am not liking the HUGE drives, mine seem to want to take 5-8 seconds to get going after i click on one, even the one with lots o space left on it

fitzmulti 07-17-2011 11:27 AM

Probably, like most other products...manufacturing MORE of them drives costs down...

TidalWave 07-17-2011 11:52 AM

or the external drive is of shittier quality

GatorB 07-17-2011 12:42 PM

Yeah, why I put everything on an external, works great

V_RocKs 07-17-2011 04:23 PM

Because the external can be churned out in larger lots than the internal which have to be specifically made in certain sizes (dimensions) and use different connectors.

Was having the same problem, fixed it by preventing the drives from spinning down in the power management settings.

It's also what's inside the external case, hence answering your initial question.

raymor 07-17-2011 05:20 PM

Since the external drives are more popular at retail, I often buy them and open them up when I need an internal drive. That leaves me about six external cases laying around for when I need to hook one up externally.

Of the 44 or so internal drives I currently have spinning, maybe six or eight were purchased as external and I took the internal drive out of the USB enclosure.

scubadiver626 07-17-2011 05:29 PM

Don't buy cheap, get hitaci. Unplug the real backup drive when not in use.

There mean't for storage only, if your using it as a main operating system drive, your crazy. Get yourself a 1Gb 10,000 RPM drive for your main drive.

I have a 2TB drive that I use for all my backups, and other than the slight 2-5 second delay when accessing something from those drives, there hasn't been any problems, and quite frankly, the price can't be beat.

barcodes 07-17-2011 07:54 PM

Heres a cheap one

2MuchMark 07-17-2011 08:09 PM

There's more to hard drives than storage capacity.
