valerian root?

doesn't seem to work on me that well - still insomniating.

i've tried melatonin - same shit. i don't smoke pot anymore.

anyone have any experience with this shizm?

ThunderBalls 01-28-2003 02:58 AM

How much you takin? Works pretty damn well for me, gotta take about 1000mg though.

DarkJedi 01-28-2003 02:59 AM

u can increase melatonin dose up to 5x

Rocky 01-28-2003 03:00 AM

i use both melatonin and valerian

really love the "cinematic" dreams that melatonin produces

take two or three valerian pills and you shouldn't have any problem sleeping, or maybe try valerian tea instead

only thing i don't like about valerian is that is smells like dirty gym socks
:repuke

KC 01-28-2003 03:00 AM

Are you smoking it or taking capsules?

HungSolo 01-28-2003 03:00 AM

just smoke a bowl. I would if my guy hadn't flaked on me.

ytcracker 01-28-2003 03:02 AM

im only dosing at like 500mg of the valerian root. it kind of calms me down but it doesn't really make me want to go to bed.

with the melatonin, i just take 1mg tablets that dissolve under the tongue. i guess i could probably increase that.

i only weigh 145 soaking wet so i dont really know what kind of ratios to take to floor me. my wife is a nutritionist and suggested the initial dosages. i'm also taking b complex.

sometimes i get these weird anxiety attacks but usually i can control them with my brain. lack of sleep is usually what causes the real intense ones.

L0stMind 01-28-2003 03:07 AM

I tried melatonin... didnt work for me, gave me strange dreams though when I finally fell asleep 4 or 5 hours later.

KC 01-28-2003 03:07 AM

try to snort a line of melatonin!

melatonin doesnt make you tired (like a tranquilizer would)...it helps "reset" your internal clock. But it shouldn't make you tired within XX mins after taking one.. if it does, you have a weak mind & could probably get the same effect from rubbing buddahs belly before you go to bed or something :)

MissEve 01-28-2003 04:04 AM

Take 2 melatonin, 2 Excedrin PMs and 2 or 3 glasses of red wine. You will sleep like a baby :)

silver 01-28-2003 04:38 AM

Go see a shrink , they will hook you up with the best sleep aids.

DarkJedi 01-28-2003 04:43 AM

also try this, it works great:

A big cup of hot milk, trow there a teaspoon of butter, and a teaspoon of honey - stir everything and drink. Tastes great and helps with insomnia.

Hustlin Entertainment 01-28-2003 04:47 AM

man you guys have too much free time

uno 01-28-2003 05:10 AM

You should not exceed 2-3 mg of melatonin. Its a case of less being more. Personally, melatonin loses efficacy after 2-3 days of use.

5-htp is a godsend for all types of things. It's the metabolic precursor to seratonin(happy juice). One step closer than tryptophan, which is the stuff in turkey which makes you tired via the same biological route.

Vitamin C helps with absorbtion and other various stuff i can't remember right now.

A good B complex will help these chemicals pass the blood brain barrier I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It will also turn your piss funny colors(b6).

Valerian has never really done much for me, and neither has Kava, but i've heard good relaxing reports of both. I can't get past the smell of valerian to take it regularly. St. John's Wort also helps some people.

Taking a combination of the above works for me on a limited basis or for only a few days at a time spaced out by a week or two. They will also provide for pretty lucid dreams.

Pot will help most people get to sleep, but its horrible for REM sleep and lucid dreaming.

Alcohol can help one get to sleep, and while it initially inhibits REM, as it wears off it increases the effect.

Ambien(zolipidem tartrate, no generic in the US yet...) is a godsend for insomnia. Ask your Doc about it. He most likely won't want to prescribe it to you for more than 30 days, as it may be habit forming. It is more to help you get on a sleep schedule. You have some pretty crazy dreams on it and there is a sort of trip if you don't fall asleep.

Xanax or valium or almost any other benzo, most notably restoril(a hypnotic benzodiazepine) will help you fall asleep, especially if you are stressed and/or have thoughts running through your mind all night.

DO NOT take over-the-counter sleep aids that contain diphenhydramine. Its very liver toxic, bad for your brain, and even worse for restful sleep. You WILL wake up feeling like shit.

You could always also try good old exercize. Sex works well for me.

I go through cycles where I take different things, but nothing works for long for me. An ambien/xanax/1-3 beer combination is almost guarenteed everytime, but horrible for your liver.

If anyone knows anything better to help me also, please, do tell. You aren't the only one with insomnia. :Graucho

DarkJedi 01-28-2003 05:39 AM

A note of concern about melatonin: I'm not saying any webbie types would be like this, but it tends to interact poorly with the endocrine systems of bipolar people. Also, regular use of melatonin can cause bloating for some people, although this tends to be more of the menstrual, not-an-issue-for-boys sort of problem.

I like Rainbow Light's Ultimate Sleep System. It is a compound with Valerian, B vitaimins, Kava Kava, passion flower, and some other stuff. They recommend 2 capsules, but I generally take 4 or don't bother.

Gaia Herbs makes a Sound Sleep compound with Valerian, GABA, Kava, California Poppy, Skullcap, Hops, and amino acids. I do the same thing with dosage on this. Can definitely impact dreams.

Of course, it is 5am in California, so ya can tell I don't exactly always get around to using either. :glugglug

Kava kava wipes me out pretty well... or makes me _really_ relaxed in the daytime.

While we are in the pharmacy section, do any of you know good happy pills? St. Jons wort doesn't do shit for me...

:helpme

ri0tdorque 01-28-2003 07:55 AM

Long term, causes brain damage.

Valerian can stop your heart, go easy.

Here's what I do:

1/6 mugwort
1/3 sage (the smokeable kind)
1/2 yerba santa

ground in a coffee grinder (not to fine)

put it in a pipe and smoke it.

you'll be chill and chill. and chill.

ytcracker 01-28-2003 11:41 AM

i heard kava kava fucks up your liver too, but that could be unfounded bullshit. my wife said they took it off the shelves at GNC.

i got a couple of those ambiens from a perscription - i'll give those a whirl.

KC 01-28-2003 11:44 AM

cracker: go to a doctor.. stop taking medical advice about sleeping disorders from the knuckleheads on GFY ;)

Cheshire 01-28-2003 11:56 AM

I have an rx for Ambien because I have random bouts of insomnia.

See a doctor.

The dream herb! I have yet to try it. How is it? I think I'm going to order some seeds; I hear its not hard to grow.

Rep 01-28-2003 05:46 PM

a fat strapping line of glass every 12hrs for two week, if you're going to be awake all the time make the most of it.

Jake 01-28-2003 05:57 PM

Cracker - Go to GNC or another nutritional supplement store and get some Z-MASS PM Its a actually a bodybuilding supplement that promotes muscle recovery and restful sleep. Its pretty much Vitamin B-6, Zinc, Magnesium, & Potassium. I never could sleep for shit until I started taking this stuff. You'll sleep like a baby and you wont wake up feeling like you have a fucking hang over like a lot of the other sleep aides on the market.

haha, worrying about long term brain damage from xanax and then recommending some lung-fucking stuff :)

bhutocracy 01-28-2003 06:53 PM

oh yeah.. valerian has never done shite for me.. and i've taken a lot as well as the rest of it - passionflower, chamomile etc, and the only time kava kava has actually worked for me was when I was in vanuatu and drank fresh stuff with the locals.. I bought some when I got home and it just didn't work for me.. as well as the concentrate squirt bottle stuff they sell..

as much as it sucks the only thing i find really works are valium, doxylamine succinate or high dose codeine ( 20 - 30mg) which is really lame as excepting the codeine, although the pharmaceuticals knock you out, it's also unbearable to get up in the morning because you're still so fucking tired.. if they could make it last for 3 or 4 hours that would be great, but taking this stuff and being groggy for 12 hours isn't good, besides the fact that taking too much valium and doxylamine isn't good.

I'd really love to find some herbal equivalent but there just isn't.

Forkbeard 01-28-2003 07:04 PM

There's a supplement called GABA (at any good health food store or GNC near you) which if you take three or four pills it will make you feel all warm and fuzzy and sleepy and you will drop right off. Powerful shit.

However: Your body becomes accustomed to it very fast. I find that it only works about three nights in a row, after which it does nothing for a month or two. So save it for when you need it.

The sleep you get is very refreshing but very brief. You'll probably wake up in about four hours feeling fully refreshed and ready to go. This can be inconvenient in the middle of the night.

Finally, there tends to be one very mild side effect, in the form of the faintest imagineable headache in your temporal lobes when you first wake up. It's no big deal and fades rapidly.

All usual warnings apply; this stuff is obviously doing some fairly major mojo with your brain chemicals, so play safe.

psyko514 01-28-2003 08:10 PM

I usually pop 800mg or 1200mg of valerian root... with no noticable effect :(

that's what i was thinking too. Everyone here has a solution, but all of them still suffer from insomnia :glugglug

Forkbeard 01-29-2003 01:53 AM

Valerian is a muscle relaxant, it doesn't have much to do with calming down your nervous system. So it's really good to take if you have spasming muscles in your back, but it won't help you sleep unless you are all-over tense (clenched jaw, locked muscles, twitching, that sort of thing.) Unless your sleep problems are related to being physically tense, Valerian's not much good.
