A warning about Dreamhost
 

I don't spam, I don't black hat. I don't "spamdex" or scrape.
99% of my dreamhost domains are blogs and parked domains.

So be careful with your dreamhost stuff. I now have to move 100 domains to another host. :mad:

So your host tells you have 14 days to move, according your contract, and your coming here to bitch instead?

I'm guessing there's something your not telling us.

Agreed. Hosts don't kick their income out the door unless you're fucking them over.

They should give me the 14 days to move everything.
NOT turn it off without notice.

Dreamhost does and will when you use too many resources. VPS or Shared.

Yup, same thing happened to me last year.

Same shit happened to me few years ago. They didn't give me 14 days and shut everything off. I couldn't get my backups either. Excuse - running top site. I didn't have any topsites there.

And they keep whatever is in your rewards account.

But they can keep their $97 and I can keep calling them scamming thieves :) that works out for me. They must be really really poor to want to scam people for such a tiny amount :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Anyone who's just remotely serious about their business will stay the fuck away from Dreamhost.

plz provide more info about your sites/activity that caused this. I have a pretty large account with dreamhost with a lot of relatively "blackhat" stuff. :\

What more do you need? Two people have chimed in claiming the same problem. I'd move your sites elsewhere. :2 cents:

I've got lots of "grayhat" feeder sites there... never had a problem or complaint.

That must be because you aren't consuming any noticeable resources, I was not in any way violating any term (that I was aware of) and have on numerous occasions asked DH to tell me exactly how I was violating their terms. They never told me, they always ignored that question.

Thats scary.... Are u sure u were not exceeding the set CPU usage for ur account? Its one of the common ways why hosts ban accounts without warning.

well, I've got to admit that most of my code is optimized for performance :) no mysql. all scraping is being done by other servers etc

What do you expect from the biggest oversellers in the business.

If anyone actually makes use of that so called unlimited bandwidth and disk space then they pull your site.

They're shite, get a proper host.

I had the same thing happen to me last month. The exact same generic letter.
Been a customer since 2006 and paying for VPS & private MYSQL server, so it sure wasn't about the resource used.

Fuck them, since I paid the month of May with Paypal, I filed a dispute and got my money back.

Sounds like a shared hosting account getting too big. I was taking up over half of the shared server with my host, I knew they'd spot it sooner or later, so I upgraded to VPS.

I'm sorry to hear what's happened, it's a lot of hassle

at least they are giving you 14 days notice, you could have woken up one day and see your sites down.

I'd say spend a little more money on hosting and you won't have issues

stop using black hat tactics.

I've heard many stories about mainstream hosts that advertise "unlimited" services for a price under $10 that kick you off as soon as you start getting any decent traffic. Their whole model is based around having thousands of domains (accounts) each getting 5-10 hits a day on one server.

how much combined traffic were you getting? >10k/day? >100k/day? >1M/day?

They just want to get rid of me, because I eat too much of their resources. They offer unlimited bandwidth. But if you hit their CPU cycles, they will kick you out. Their reason is the "server's security". And they can get quite ugly doing so.

I always laugh when i see threads like this.It would be even more hilarious if your next host will be servage.

Yes. It's nothing new and there are plenty of complaints published. I gave them a shot and they were usable enough for my purposes but in that time they did some things many would be annoyed with. One day out of the blue when Googlebot or another spider hit me they sent me the dreaded notice that I was using too much resources. As a result they throttled one of my sites from then on despite my pointing out that it was merely one bot. I also noticed that they screwed around with some of my sites by adding "robots.txt" and various entries. In addition I had a database grow to about 1 GB. At that point they seemed to have capped it or something. I stayed with them for a while because I didn't care too much about those sites ad they were dirt cheap. But if you care at all and get more than 250 visitors a day to all your sites there, I would highly advise not using them.
