I was in the room with him when the surgeon was closing him up. The best part was after he shot the novacaine into the wound the doctor jammed his finger in and asked "can you feel that?". My buddy said "no". The doctor said "good because I'm touching your chin and jaw bones right now to check for fractures." Hockey players = bad ass!

I know it hurts. I had half my teeth smashed in, my bottom lip torn almost torn off, and my gums smashed open playing hockey a LONG time ago.

The mouthguard I wore only spread the damage over a wider area.

After the second incident, I quit playing ice hockey for good.

Good news is, even in the early '80s the surgeons did such a good job that you can't see any scars unless you stretch my bottom lip.

My old man smashed the right side of his face in playing hockey. That's nuttin.

That's nothing compared to the infected hole I had in my right hand, fucking brutal.

The plastic surgeon did them because of the cut location, on the face. The wound was pretty nasty. If I remember correct it took 8-9 internal stitches and then a bunch on the outside. He's lucky the surgeon was on duty that night. He said he needed to log some hours to keep his hospital credentials. haha
