Geforce FX Reviews Coming In

Here's a review from Tom's Hardware -
http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030127/index.html

Click through to the cooling section, they have a link posted so you can hear what the thing sounds like on boot up, that's fucking loud, it does sound like a vacuum, ha ha ha.

Anyways, there's other reviews of it at these links -

From what I'm seeing there, the slim performance increase over the Radeon and noise isn't worth making me wanna buy one of those cards. I'll just pick up a Radeon 9700 Pro and with the money I'll save, I'll use that to get the next Radeon card that rolls out :thumbsup All of the months of waiting for the Geforce FX, only to be let down :(

Slick 01-27-2003 05:34 PM

What I really get a kick outta is how people are soooo damn stupid over at Ebay. Heck, Comp USA is taking pre-orders for the card for $400 with free shipping, but yet I see people on Ebay bidding OVER $500 for the cards with like 6 days to go in the auction. Fuck, I should pre-order a couple, then sell them on there.

I think that's pretty much exactly what I said in the last Geforce FX thread. ;>

But ya, I agree it is dissapointing.. Nvidia dropped the ball bigtime here.

Cheers,

I think I'll wait, no real need for that sort of speed, especially at that price point. Give it 6 months for Nvidia to work out the kinks and for the price to come down.

unconnected 01-27-2003 08:48 PM

Did you hear how loud that fucker is though?
jesus christ.. I can see if you live next door to an airport how it wouldnt' be that bad, but come on.. that is ridiculous

Lick-Clit 01-27-2003 08:55 PM

A GeForce4 Ti4600 is still more than good enough.

FlyingIguana 01-27-2003 08:57 PM

i might buy a Ti 4200 soon. i wouldn't waste my money on a 9700 pro

alias 01-27-2003 09:18 PM

the 9700 is smokin.. worth every penny

i've got the geforce 4 with 128 megs ram, how much more of a difference can this new card make?

I think that if you went with either a Geforce FX or Radeon 9700 Pro, you'd see a nice performance boost, but as we figured above, the Radeon 9700 Pro is the way to go right now UNLESS you wanna wait for the next ATI card to come out.

Yeah, that REALLY turned me off to buying the card. They said it before it came out that it was loud, now that reviews are out, everyone is saying the same thing.

After hearing the sound file of it on Tom's Hardware, that really turned me away.

For those that haven't heard it yet, check out this link -
http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/...rce_fx-06.html
scroll down about half way, you'll see links to what the card sounds like on boot up compared to the Radeon 9700 Pro, that's unbearable, I don't think that my wifey would like watching her soaps with that in the background, ha ha ha.

FATPad 01-27-2003 10:20 PM

hehe. I thought it was some guy taping his vacuum cleaner for real. lol.

That's horrible. I don't see how anyone can release something that is that loud in all good conscience.

Guess you guys have never overclocked... I had an Athlon system about a year ago with one of those Delta insane fucking hair dryer fans on the CPU, bastard sounded like that all the time.

Yassi 01-27-2003 10:58 PM

I guess it is time for nVIDIA to step off the throne :)
I remeber when 3dfx had it all in the video cards market and then nVIDIA fucked them up with Riva 128 and then Riva TNT.
3dfx responded with the Banshee, which was a totaly disaster.
After that they went into a steep downslope.

I hope the same does not happent to nVIDIA

Yassi 01-27-2003 10:59 PM

Have you seen 3dfx's site
http://www.3dfx.com
so sad....

Slick 01-28-2003 07:09 AM

Well, even though Nvidia is sucking right now, it looks like there might be another contender stepping into the ring, S3. Check this out -

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=7319

I know that people usually say that things that sound too good to be true, usually are, but heck, if it is true, S3 is gonna put out a card that kicks ass AND is cheap, they could change the entire market to cheaper faster video cards.

They say that the cards START AT $90, so who knows how high they'll go for a decent card. Looking at what the specs are on it from the article, it doesn't look like it'd be all that great. I guess that we'll just have to see what happens with it.

Oh yeah, I just ordered my Radeon 9700 Pro :thumbsup I can finally put my old Geforce 3 Ti200 card to rest, ha ha ha.

Ya - just don't directx9 it though :(

NoCarrier 01-28-2003 07:31 AM

I'm an NVidia fan, but this video card is ridiculous. The specs are nice, just like the 9700, but the noise and that ugly fan is horrible.

I'll pass. I hope they fix those issues with the next one.

x-vision 01-28-2003 07:44 AM

this isn't an ad, but we're an official nvidia partner and get geforce 4s below wholesale cost. if any gfy webmasters need one, we'll be happy to sell it at cost.:)

Triple 6 01-28-2003 08:49 AM

I have a geforce 4 ti 4600. WTF is a ti 4800? I think they had a typo in that review.

Anyway, the new FX card makes my card look bad, yet the ATi card was slightly edged. Fuck nvidia, Im going with the new ATI card that gets released, whenveer that would be. But I play games like bf1942, sof2, so I would just rather wait to get a new card that would show me a significant improvement that I would actually notice.

No typo. I believe that the TI 4800 is exactly the same card as the TI 4600, but has support for AGP 8x. That's the difference.

I read that Nvidia only released the GFFX to keep up with the market - their main focus supposedly lies on the next gen chipsets, the NV 31 and NV 34.

However, if they keep on going on like this, I see another 3dfx tragedy happening. Cuz ATi's R350 is gonna steal the show.

Here's a good spot, it sells for $272 with free shipping -
http://www.ocsystem.com/atirad8512dd1.html
It's an OEM version of the card.

If you want a retail version, look around Ebay, you can find some over there in retail box that go for $275-$300 (plus shipping). I ended up winning mine over there, paying $275 plus $7 shipping, which was a great deal.

The prices may drop down early next month though.

Sounds like my t-bird box right now :/ Was worse when I had my 5 1/4" Steel bladed fan in there tho. I had to build a fucking starter module for it because it had such heavy blades, 24 volt to start, 12 to keep running.

No problem, anytime. A good thing to do is to look up the card on Ebay a couple times a day and look for the new auctions with the "Buy It Now" feature, that's the way to go. I just saw an auction end a while ago, a new retail card sealed for $280, but it was snatched up right away.
