Do you tip hotel housekeeping?

We recently went to Santa Fe for a small vacation and I ended up having this discussion with my brother-in-law.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/06/24...ing/index.html

I for one think it's absolutely ridiculous to tip a hotel housekeeper. In fact, up until that trip, I hadn't even heard or thought about it. Look, I know it's a shit-job .. but IT'S A JOB! Where do you draw the line?

Just curious how many of you guys tip on a regular basis and if this is something you've been doing for a while?

L-Pink 06-24-2011 11:16 AM

I always tip housekeeping staffs a little bit if the rooms are done right. Thats just me.

.

Nikki_Licks 06-24-2011 11:17 AM

I did when we were in Laughlin recently. The housekeeper took good care of us, plenty of extra bottled water,, towels....you name it....:thumbsup

sperbonzo 06-24-2011 11:20 AM

I find that if I leave them a buck each morning as I leave the room for the day, I get really really good service, extra towels, etc....

You don't have to, of course, I just see the difference when I do. I've been doing this for at least 15 years

Juicy D. Links 06-24-2011 11:20 AM

Bryan G 06-24-2011 11:27 AM

If I am staying a hotel for a few days I always tip them.

magicmike 06-24-2011 11:28 AM

I consider the tip to housekeeping a payoff for staying out of my stuff / not stealing it.

Its worked everytime so far.

Valet parkers, bellhops, and the kid that helps you with lines and hoses at the gas dock in the marina.

I usually leave something on the night table so when she wakes up, showers and cleans - she won't feel used

You should tip them yes, even if only $5.

What constitutes for really good service if you are rarely in the room?

I've always thought the practice was kind of strange, I don't understand what extra you would be getting out of the tip, so really am curious.

The Heron 06-24-2011 11:48 AM

I tried once at an all inclusive but ended up getting WORSE than before, less or no water bottles no clean towels, etc. it was stupid so no i don't bother

JamesGw 06-24-2011 12:02 PM

If I stay for more than like 4-5 days, I usually drop them a $50 or $100, assuming they didn't take any of my stuff or screw anything up.

Yes I always tip hotel housekeeping

ShellyCrash 06-24-2011 12:10 PM

I usually don't. Actually I usually don't even let them in my room when I'm not in there. This time I actually am going to though because she has been sneaking me lots of stuff like real cream and sugar from room service for my coffee.

Sharky 06-24-2011 12:24 PM

I never have, unless there was an above normal mess (kids getting sick = $50 tip minimum). But I usually give it directly to them.

How do you leave a daily tip? Attach it to a note?

ShellyCrash 06-24-2011 12:36 PM

Also years ago at Webmaster Access West @ the Hollywood Sheraton the subject of me not letting housekeeping in my room unattended came up and I got alot of guff from everyone, some of the guys at the show teased me and thought it was silly so I agreed to take the do not disturb sign off the door for the rest of the trip.

Housekeeping knocked over an $80 bottle of perfume, i assume off the bathroom counter and onto the floor. It cracked the glass and and broke the top, pretty much ensuring I couldn't take it back home with me.

In a way I guess I was almost asking for it by not taking the precaution and spending the extra scratch to get a travel size, but I just choose to avoid it all together by not letting them in at all. Over the years I've had enough stuff rifled through, snatched and broken that it's just not worth it. I only call them if I need something, I'm not messy, I don't need my bed made every day.

CaptainHowdy 06-24-2011 12:40 PM

I can pretend either that I do or that I don't, who cares ...

Wilsy 06-24-2011 12:44 PM

On my last day i leave them all the change i have around and a extra 10 euros

Due 06-24-2011 12:49 PM

I always leave from a couple of $ up to a few 100 if I had a suite party or similar (based on the room condition)

I did have before where it was needed to call "extra housekeeping" and "carpet cleaning" but was never charged "cleanup fees" by the hotel.

Always bribe the front desk, bellboy and the house keeping they are the people that gets the complaints from the people int he room next to you :321GFY

epitome 06-24-2011 01:09 PM

I leave $2 each day and also try to make the room as tidy as possible so they can get in and out.

I put all of the dirty towels in a pile, pickup any trash I have lying around the room, etc.

I always feel bad for them ... it's one of those jobs most people have to take, not want to take ... so I try to help out where I can.

Having been in food service in my teens, I'm also the guy that stacks all of his dishes when done eating at a restaurant. 20% is my baseline tip, more for better service. I also have a $3 minimum, so if it's just me and I'm eating on the cheap and it's like $10, I still leave $3.

When I stay for more than a day I do. It's nice to have more than enough towels and stuff.

I am the same exact way when given the choice, and when travel alone (conferences).

If I travel with GF, for whatever reason, she always wants clean sheets, towels, whatever.

I usually don't let housekeeping into my room at all unless I'm there for more than three days. But at the end of my stay I definitely tip because it's a shit job and they have to deal with dirty towels, sheets, and garbage cans, etc etc. To me that is worth a tip.

So do we tip the first day so that we have more products throughout the trip?

I never realized towels were such an issue. Just called and got more.

IllTestYourGirls 06-24-2011 06:14 PM

Tipping is a good way to keep an economy moving. During this recession Ive started tipping more than I normally do. The money goes right back into the economy.

But to answer the question yes I tip hotel housekeeping.

Brent 3dSexCash 06-24-2011 06:47 PM

I give them 3-5$...just to make sure my crap is still in the room when i get back at night.

It's interesting that five dollars would prevent someone from stealing a watch, jewelry, laptop, clothing, etc.

ExtremeBank_Adam 06-24-2011 08:02 PM

I usually leave $5 on the pillow each day when I leave the room. I try and tip well all the time, unless service is horrible. I also tip the valet, pizza guy, bellhops, the guy at the marina, taxi/limo drivers, just about anything service related.

ShellyCrash 06-24-2011 08:06 PM

I left her a fiver and the chocolates I got from baddog in a cute little stack on the desk.

AMSCash 06-24-2011 08:09 PM

I always over tip. No matter what I am doing. At times you may think that they do not deserve it, but if the shoes were on the opposite foot, we would act differently.
