I think most people don't even know that they can download Gtalk as a messenger app, I've heared a few times they find google chat inconvenient because they have to log into gmail and keep the big window open.. But I love the fact that all my emails and chat history are saved in one place that is easy to search, and offline messages are more reliable than other messengers..

Mostly for legacy purposes. There was a time when ICQ was the only option for most people. I am talking back in the mid to late 1990s.
