Instead of taking over Amps thread, I started a new one.

Gman brings up a good point. How many affiliate programs have 'Since 96, since 97' on them, but they brand new hahahaha

I see many people say they started in 1997.

What did you do in 1997?

I set up Live cams in New Orleans for an early paysite doing a 'Dorm Room' cam hiring girls and paying them to sit on cam as if it was a dorm... the site went bankrupt and i moved to California. It was no loss for me, I was paid up front and kept all the equipment.

I then helped start the first 'Free Internet Cafe' there, installing a t1 for 6 boxes of free use at a coffee shot in an Art Museum, with donations from local companies and art centers, along with the famous 'Bourbocam' on Bourbon Street in New Orleans above the 'Cats Meow' Club... This was from 97 - 98. I hadnt gotten into 'webmasterin' yet, but would eventually.

Where were you?

Lets hear it old timers.

I was still doing network design and consulting full time and playing with Dreamnet. Dreamnet became my full time job in a little later when a few of my major clients discovered that it was not wholesome family fare and ended our business relationships. Hell this is much more fun anyhow.

1997 I was head tech for my local ISP still installing those fast 33.6 modems we used to thin k was so cool.

Had a computer store during the day doing upgrades to 486 dx 66's upping them to blazing fast 166 pentiums.

Also had a lease with CE for xxxnakedxxx.com but couldn't make it fly. If I only knew then what I know now.

In '97 I was enjoying the good times. Traffic was easy to get and there was no end to the people who wanted to throw tens of thousands of dollars at you for your traffic. Nobody had really met face to face since there were no adult internet shows till the Orlando show towards the end of '97. YNOT was THE place to be and the piss flowed nonstop. Nobody had ever heard of a TGP and the majority of content out there was NOT licensed. PK was Numero Uno when it came to traffic ranking. Karasxxx.com and CyberErotica.com were the two big paysites that just about EVERYONE sent traffic to. Serge was a big-mouth (oh wait...). Loved getting those .02 cent checks from IEG. Lots of the big names today were not even online yet.

in 97, lets see. i was doing telemarketing going into my 3rd year at university. didn't have a pc, wanted one so i could start some sites.

i remember seeing an article in the paper about people running porn sites. they'd submit to yahoo and get 5000 hits a day. so when i finally got my pc, i submitted to yahoo thinking i was gonna make a killing. well here it is 4 and a half years later, and i'm still waiting for my 5000 hits from yahoo.

In early 96, I was still running a 900 sports line and dating service, and had just got on the net and started playing around with some webiste stuff.

In 1997, I had just sold my 900 line, and was running a site called "Voyeur Playground", which was actually one of the very first hidden camera sites out there... even before Voyeur Web started getting huge.

:winkwink:

Sold that site to Internet Supply in 98 or 99 I believe, and began building a free site/ paysite network.

As of today, my company owns about 50 free sites (tgp's and toplists), and 6 niche-specific paysites.

*This concludes my history lesson for today.*

:thumbsup

i had just closed down my ISP business in Silicon Valley (San Mateo, CA) where I was selling ISDN/Frame Relay connections...and moved up to Vancouver, BC and worked for the largest provider in North America of online marketing services for public companies to promote themselves to potential investors as the Advertising and Marketing Services Manager.

In 1997 I was in the middle of a very very bad nervous breakdown. We had lost both of my husbands parents and a baby and the only income we had all within 18 months of each other and in late 96/97, I had a severe nervous breakdown and to kick it in the teeth just a little bit harder, my husband also had a breakdown at the same time.

I have NO clue how we ever made it thru all of that with BOTH of us breaking down and we spent almost all of 97 working thru it...... but we did and we are both stronger for it now.......

We, as Internet and pc addicts, fondly call it our "Illegal Operations"........ and we needed to format and reboot our systems....... LMAO

YES I can joke about it now. :1orglaugh

I'll tell you, when I was running the Voyeur Playground site, I had no idea about how to use search engines effectively.

One day, I wake up and see all these extra hits. So I go check my WSS stats, and I see it's Yahoo sending about 10,000 hits!! I never even submitted to them. Unless they manually added the site themselves, I have no idea how it got there. This is back when Yahoo was still a true directory listing, and not using results from other engines.

:winkwink:

dantheman 01-25-2003 05:03 PM

back in 96/97 yahoo staff would surf and around and add sites on their own to make up the directory.

FlyingIguana - Wanna hear a funny Yahoo story from late '96? My very first site was a celeb site. Yes, I was one of the unedumacated who started without licensed content. I had a site with Pamela Anderson, Madonna, Bo Derek, and other assorted celebs. I made the site just for practice and tried submitting it to a few SE's and all of a sudden it started getting traffic after a few days. After the site had been up for about 5 days I found this new site called YNOT and found out I could actually make money with my site lol. I put up a few banners for some sponsor that I can't remember (Sex Museum?) and started making money! I was getting about 1000 hits a day and was making something like $20 a day. I looked at Yahoo and saw that they did not have a celeb category. I found a phone number on the contact page and called. I told the lady who answered that I needed to get a site listed and she transferred me to some guy. I told him that I had a site about celebrities that I wanted to get listed. He said there was no celeb category and that he could add me to the general adult category. I asked if he could create a new directory and he said that if I had a pic of Kathy Ireland he would. As luck would have it I had found a semi-nude pic of Kathy Ireland that morning and told the guy where to find it. The next day there was a Celeb category on Yahoo lol. The first day I got something like 90k uniques. My local host that I had my virtual page on called me and said I needed to get a domain and regular hosting. I registered OAD.com (I was going to add a celeb pic a day and call the site Once A Day) and asked some of the people on YNOT where to get hosting. Khan hooked me up with some Kiwi in Florida who had good hosting. I called the guy at Yahoo a couple of days later and got him to point the link to my new domain. For almost 2 months I was the only link in the Celeb section. I was getting around 85k uniques a day and sending most of it to Babylon-X and a few others. Less than 3 weeks after I started my site I received a check for $10k. I kept it a free celeb site for about 3 months then changed it over to a toplist with no content in Febuary or March of '97. By then Yahoo had added about 10 more links to the Celeb section and my traffic was down to about 40k a day or so but that helped fuel my toplist and make me a lot of money that year. By the beginning of '98 there were a couple hundred sites in the celeb category on Yahoo and I was down to about 5k a day. I ran the toplist for another year then sold it for $25k in mid '99. To this day oad.com still comes up in the top 10 when you do a search for "nude celebs" on Yahoo. Last I heard it was still getting about 2k hits a day from Yahoo.

THANKS YAHOO! :thumbsup

Hahaha... I remember that shit... What sites did they run, cause I don't even remember sending em traffic.

In 1997, I was 15 years old, and running a site on Tripod with nothing but Tyra Banks pictures (me and my best friend had a crush on her).
I knew nothing about being a webmaster and nothing about bringing in traffic. Eventually, I figured out that Xpics didn't track your refferers and I would post my sponsor links to newsgroups and say they were backdoors to sites like AssAwards. At my peek, I was making $600US a month which was pretty good money for a 15 year old Canadian.

Yep...the good 'ol YNot, easy traffic days. And IA2000 in Orlando was awesome!

I remember the 'exodus'. Although I don't seem to recall what sparked it. Wasn't it the fact that Serge and the crew thought YNOT should be for registered users only, and not allow anon posters?

In 1997... I graduated high school, met my ex, went to college.

Rich 01-25-2003 05:54 PM

I'll admit it, when I first got into being a webmaster I had a (cringe) password site. This was a long time ago, probably 1995-96, I was one of the first sites to bring passwords from irc to the web. I was ignorant, didn't realize I was costing the paysites money. Anyway at first I had no sponsors, but I got a couple hundred bucks a month from snail mail donations. Once I found babylon-x, I started making a killing sending them clicks, with maybe 5 working passwords on my site at a time (they never died back then). One day I had a long conversation with a paysite owner, who unfortunatly is no longer with us. He explained to me the whole "paying for bandwith" situation, since I was hosted on my isp. That day I took down my site, and started redirecting all the freeloaders to a paysite. I'm still ashamed that I ever ran that site, but in a way I was proud for dropping a cash cow like that based on morals.

I started up my first casino shortly after, but found it easier to get traffic to porn sites. I got a couple amazing listings in yahoo for a couple free sites (15 free pics maybe, on 5 pages). Those yahoo listings along with some traffic from FFA link pages made me 5 figures in the first month with a PPS program called banneranswers.com. Unfortunatly, that program was a complete ripoff and I didn't see a dime. After that, I stayed out of the porn side of the business until about 8 months ago. All that time I was building up my casinos, now I own 3 and run the affiliate program for them and 6 others. So now's I'm back selling porn part time, watch out FantasyMan.

I didn't mention, when I redirected all the traffic from my password site I sent it to the tour of a paysite I had a password for on my site for a super long time. Back then any traffic was solid gold, I'm sure I made him a couple grand.
