GFY member pays bill with 2,500 pennies

VERNAL, Utah (AP) -- A Utah man has been cited on a charge of disorderly conduct after paying for a disputed medical bill with 2,500 pennies.

The Deseret News of Salt Lake City reports Jason West went to Basin Clinic in Vernal on May 27 prepared to dispute an outstanding $25 bill.

Assistant Vernal Police Chief Keith Campbell says that after asking staff members whether they accepted cash, West dumped 2,500 pennies on the counter and demanded that staff count them.

Campbell says the incident upset staff because pennies were strewn about the counter and floor, and West's action served "no legitimate purpose."

Police later issued the 38-year-old West a citation for disorderly conduct. That carries a fine of as much as $140. Or 14,000 pennies.

Pennies might be inconvenient legal tender but they are still legal tender. As far as him making a mess with pennies on the floor etc, yea that's low life.

V_RocKs 06-06-2011 01:24 PM

Back in the day we used to uphold thee federal law that says you can't refuse legal tender... I guess times have changed..

in germany it's a tradition to pay the shoes of the bride in pennies (cent) when marrying. but i guess he wasnt going to marry anyone there

DamianJ 06-06-2011 01:31 PM

In England, the most you can pay for anything with pennies is 20p.

Fascinating eh, fact fans?

CaptainHowdy 06-06-2011 01:33 PM

It is far worse to be interested in news about someone paying something with pennies ...

Dirty Dane 06-06-2011 01:34 PM

Next time the doc will give him 250 needle shots. Small shots.

JamesGw 06-06-2011 01:41 PM

I think he's in trouble for throwing the pennies down. Not paying with them.

I agree. Had he given them the pennies in a container there would have likely been little or no trouble.

On a side note, the people that made Utah laws were extremely, extremely bored, right? And tax payers must be ecstatic knowing their taxes are helping the law to get rid of people paying with legal course currency, how they dare to? :1orglaugh

Capital > Interests of the people

every damn time.

Tom_PM 06-06-2011 02:44 PM

Disorderly conduct my ass. Just pick up the pennies and dont call the cops, pussies. Say thank you and please come again with a sweet smile. Having the man charged with a misdemeanor is only going to piss him off and you still have to count the pennies, babies.

Tom_PM 06-06-2011 02:45 PM

Hey, that was post # 12,345! I think I won!

kristin 06-06-2011 02:46 PM

I would have loved to have seen that.

it not the payment that the problem is the dumping them all around

if he had dropped a big ass box of pennies on the table and demanded that they count them

he could have made the arguement you are doing now

RyuLion 06-06-2011 03:22 PM

Yawnnnnnnn...

i am mad, my son got 140$ ticket today, cant read this

Seth Manson 06-06-2011 04:10 PM

Well since pennies upset them in Utah, I hope he pays his fine in nickels.

Kiopa_Matt 06-06-2011 04:25 PM

That's actually on the list of things I want to do before I die. Get into a beef with some company I don't like who's demanding payment from me, and show up at their office with a large container of pennies. "Here's your $1200, dick!", type of thing. Would be fun.

Phoenix 06-06-2011 04:29 PM

i almost did this recently...but it would have cost me more to get enough pennies delivered..lol
i dont see the issue, i doubt he threw them around the room.
i dont see this going past a judge if he decides to defend himself

newB 06-06-2011 04:30 PM

If I were them I would refuse to accept any of the Canadian cents that would most likely be in among the lot.
