I'm not an expert on what the new generation is going to want on the internet but
I can't imagine that I would go to Facebook to do searches on tech stuff like
programming.

google seems more and more like geocities to me every day tbh.

The difference in that comparison is that Yahoo bought geocities and then
changed it for the worst.

If yahoo had added really good social networking software to geocities we
may have never heard of myspace or facebook.

Yahoo didn't even give priority to geocties pages in it's own search results.
Google does with youtube however.

No, because they offer two totally different platforms and services. People use Facebook to let everyone know they just watched a movie, or their ass looks fat in a dress, or their kid spilled his cheerios'.

The author of the article is woefully ignorant. Google's datamining > Facebook's. That said, Facebook might end up succeeding Google as the #1 site on the internet, but not because of any of the reasons outlined in the article.

People are using FB more and more for reviews. Before I buy something I'm not sure of, I go to FB and see if they have a page and read customer's comments.

google ranks sites more or less like it always did. just because you lost does not = "broken."

From what I read, you said Facebook is outdated and old, similar to what happened to Geocities....Am I wrong?

Like everything else, my guess is that another company that has yet to be invented will challenge them both.

I do think Facebook is more geared towards the "new" internet. But it also is at risk of falling out of fashion and being replaced. Google is an older style internet company, but it doesn't really share that same risk. There have been many cases of ultra popular web sites falling out of fashion and fading away (MySpace) so it can and does happen pretty often.

If anything that's probably Google's ace in the hole, at least against Facebook. But the whole idea of a "search engine" will start fading in a few years. Kids growing up today probably will think of Google as the email company or the Android company and not the search engine company like we all think of it now. The problem with that is Google makes all of it's money from search, so if the web becomes less search centric, they need to find a new revenue stream.

Based on that, I would say both companies are not as rock solid as some people think.

The question would be, how is Facebook going to make a good search engine?
By copying google?
Are they are going to come up with a equal or better search method than google?

How would Facebook match googles depth in search results so that it's no longer
worth leaving facebook to search google?

Sounds like an expensive pursuit that would be catastrophic if it failed.

I mean, yahoo started out as a search engine and who the fuck searches there?
But some how facebook can just throw up a search link and it kills google.

It won't REPLACE google.....But for people who are on facebook already, it would be much easier to just type in their search box than going to google and typing in the same search...I'm sure that there are experts on damn near everything on FB

It doesn't matter for Facebook that there is 1 or 2 percent of enlighten people who value their privacy and who know how stuff works and who owns Facebook.




As for the statement that Google doesn't know its surfers or webmasters "it has almost no first-hand knowledge of any of the users who created this content." I think someone with very little in his head has written it.
Google knows very well its users perhaps even better than Facebook. People don't write their sexual deviation on Facebook, people don't share all personal details on Facebook. However people feel very secured doing such personal search on Google.
They also feel very safe using Gmail as their personal email box. Their searches and their mail possibly hold much more very sensitive personal information. Just think about it for a second.

I have 2 PR1 blogs now and they sit idly below tube site results, and yeah Google is broken when it indexes tube sites with 12 ads on them and a 2-8 minute clip giving control of roughly 80% adult traffic to 1 company that owns many domains...
Treating individual pages as separate for rank under one domain is FAIL.

Yet blogs with more content and some clips with more detail with daily updates and better back linking on the subject matter wont be seen till on average PR4.

You will notice several of the major tube sites have completely dommed all keywords to PR1 positions just look.
