Tragically Hip...how the hell did they not hit it big everywhere?

these cats are/were a fucking great canadian band, really sad shit like Ke$$ha and Black Eyed Peas somehow are huge acts and Tragically Hip barely got airplay here in the states.

/rant

oh wait a second, they dont sound like autotune robots, they look like normal slobs and their songs are satirical and bitter.

Never heard them before (heard of them tho) Will give em a listen. :)

iamtam 06-04-2011 05:31 AM

the hip were a made and paid for canadian act, and investment rather than a bold new musical act. they got airplay and exposure when investors pretty much bought media space in canada. the us is just too expensive for them so they got stuck and never went much further.

Kiopa_Matt 06-04-2011 05:49 AM

Don't know, but definitely a good band.

Martin 06-04-2011 07:15 AM

Been listening to The Hip since I was a kid.

Mandatory Canadian content was a huge CRTC deal back in the day. You couldn't literally couldn't listen to the radio for an hour without hearing a Hip song.

Caligari 06-04-2011 07:38 AM

LOL I wish they were mandatory in the States considering the amount o' shite getting airplay at the time (and now). You Canadians may not realize how many really good musicians/tv/films you produce. When I was living in Washington I ended up watching Canadian TV half the time because it was simply better.

Socks 06-04-2011 08:24 AM

That's pretty funny, as we used to use the Tragically Hip as an example of a band that actually did sort of "make it" in the USA. Until the Barenaked Ladies came along I guess.

BlackCrayon 06-04-2011 08:47 AM

meh, i don't find their music very interesting. their early stuff isn't bad but a lot of it is pretty generic.

GTS Mark 06-04-2011 08:55 AM

Best Canadian band of all time IMHO

I'm sorry I'm canadian and I cannot stand the Tragically shit. It bothers me to no end that people think this is canadas band. They are complete crap. I went to a concert and had to walk out they were so shit. Flame away but its true. There is a reason why no one else in the world has not heard of them.

Agent 488 06-04-2011 02:19 PM

they suck and your average canadian has terrible taste in music.

i would also recommend one of the great horror comedies of all time, a Canadian film called "Invasion" aka "Welcome To Exceptional Vista."

the hip are awesome
when i was going to university there were bus trips to go see the hip play in the states

they would sell out a huge outdoor concert in canada....but they played small piece of shit bars in the states with almost no americans there
bus loads of cdns would show up and rock out though

the hip sounds just like their records, one of the best concert bands you will hear

my hands in the river, my feet back up on the bank..looked up to the sky above and said hey man thanks.....awesomeness

Oh please! I love plenty of canadian bands. I mother earth, tea party, crystal castles, guess who, I could go on and on. Yes I have a canadian passport. I used to have a british one incase I decided to work over there. All I'm saying is they are over rated and their lack of success anywhere else in the world proves this. As for my "scarf" sorry I don't wear the typical molson canadian beer shirt that most wear from their 24 of canadian. Lol.

Not trying to hate but nobody under 30 listens to this kind of music anymore. This is the kind of shit my mom would like.

:1orglaugh thats right because you're busy listening to real muzak like lady gaga, ke$$ha and black eyed pees. i really do feel sorry for 20 somethings though because they are fed this souless corporate crap which is no longer about music as much as it is about status, and its quite possible that very soon the youngsters will never even know about actual musicians who played actual instruments, and ergo had to have actual talent. sad.

I like a lot of stuff and I don't listen to the radio. I have a 120+ gig music library so I can always listen to the stuff I know I like. I listen to a lot of hip hop, reggae, EDM, dubstep, some rock, and lots of gangster rap. Besides the beats I like music that you can feel, whether it be deep bass or spine chilling lyrics.

Can't wait for EDC in Vegas this year. :winkwink:

Last year:

Caligari 06-05-2011 07:06 PM

I un-apologize.
j/k nice vids, but thats electronica, techno.
raves (massive raves) have been around for decades now and i know some 30-40 year old moms who dig that as well as "gangsta rap" et al.
its really nothing new, just newer versions of existing forms.

so do people under 30 listen to classical, traditional jazz, blues at all?

twistyneck 06-05-2011 07:30 PM

They sound like a million other almost good bands. They lack that something special that makes them stand out.

EDM = electronic dance music. "Techno" is it's own genre, not just a term for all music electronic.

As far as classical rock, jazz, and blues go... not unless you're a music major or hanging out with your parents, haha.

Some music you might like:

hip hop/rap:

I remember "The Edison Twins" showing in kid's time 25 years ago... that was Canadian I think?

i can get into some of the rap but i can't stand electronic type music. it just seems so dead and void of any kind of feeling. i just don't get it and its not really an age thing either as my sister has been listening to stuff like that 20 years ago. if you like dancing to it, i suppose i could see some of the interest but the music alone...its just samples fed into computers. luckily judging from rock concerts i go to there are still plenty of young people still listening to people using actual instruments to make music.

candyflip 06-06-2011 05:07 AM

They've got a huge following where I'm from, but considering we're less than 60 miles to the Canadian border...I'm sure that has something to do with it.

Dwreck 06-06-2011 05:19 AM

Gord Downie ( the lead singer) had a place not to far away from me in Toronto. When I saw them live he does these crazy man rants between versus.. like hes telling a story within the song. It's cool.

How Bryan can like the Maple Leafs and hate the Tragically Hip is beyond me. I personally was a fan of their day for night album.

I don't like thier new stuff at all but I much rather see them live than say Nickleback.

Canadian television is as bad as it gets, there have been and are rare exceptions. Same with feature films.

Though I don't think Australia is much better. I can't even think of many Australian TV programs seen over here, i only remember a horrid old kids show called Skippy the Kangaroo that was on about the same level as Canada's The Littlest Hobo about a stray german shepherd. I also remember an Australian documentary series about a typical middle class dysfunctional family which was a ripoff of a PBS series in the US.

The Hip are a cult band in Western New York - more appreciated there than in Canada.

the only reason they didn't make it internationally was because they had bad PR people working for them. They finally get a chance to appear on SNL for larger part of the US to hear them and they play 2 of their newer songs that were slow and laid back.. brilliant... Their most famous song ever, New Orleans is sinking, would have won over more fans but they didn't do it. They did a live version in Boston years ago where Gordie goes off on a rant for about 5 minutes about a crazy job he had and despite that being one of their claims to fame Gordie refuses to try to improv any more stories again.

If they had someone like you or I helping them with promos they'd probably be world renown by now. ;)

the hip suck.

it's like the canadians have fallen in love with a ugly chick and they just can't believe no one else thinks she's pretty.

boring, workmanlike mid-tempo canuck rock overplayed to death on canuck tv and radio.

what's with you on this topic? was your mom a roadie for the band or what?

plenty of kids playing instruments still. Sure they'll go through some stages that will bring them into some crazy places with their tastes, but I have a feeling we all had that growing up. I never wanted to listen to the blues when I was in my teens, not even in my twenties. Jazz? shit, I'm only starting to get into that now and I'm 34.... I think tastes evolve with just about everyone. I'm kind of grateful for that, I'd hate to think I would be listening to fucking Right Said Fred and the spin doctors when i was older... I'd probably kill myself.. haha

PS the hip are in windsor on canada day... dig it...
