ARRESTED: BONO singer from U2 for sentenced to 47 days in JAIL (NOT IN AMERICA)

http://www.torontosun.com/2011/06/02...tchhiking-bono

BONO was picked up in Vancouver for hitchhiking, he was sentenced to 42 days in jail!!! A Canadian hockey player helped wrestle him to the ground while police handcuffed an angry Bono.

What is Canada becoming America!??!

The Bono nonprofit took in $14,993,873 in public donations in 2008, the latest year for which tax records are available.

Of that, $184,732 was distributed to three charities, according to the IRS filing.

Meanwhile, more than $8 million was spent on executive and employee salaries.

I believe he is referring to the fact that both Bono's Charities ONE and RED had taken in millions in donations, but only doled out a minute portion of that to help combat poverty and hunger in Africa. I think it was less than 5% or something. They responded with the excuse that they are not a charity but rather they are an Advocacy Group. Pretty weak in my opinion.

"The non-profit One campaign received almost £9.6million in donations in 2008 but handed over only £118,000 to good causes.

Figures show that the group also spent more than £5.1million on executive and staff salaries.

One insisted that it was focused on lobbying, not funding charities.

The figures were published by the New York Post, which was one of several US newspapers to receive a host of expensive gifts including leather notebooks valued at £9.60, bags of coffee worth the same amount and £13 water bottles.

The presents were delivered separately in oversized shoe boxes to coincide with this week?s UN summit on the millennium development goals in Manhattan.

One said it took no money from the public and that most of its funding came from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Spokesman Oliver Buston said: ?We don?t provide programmes on the ground. We?re an advocacy and campaigning organisation.

?There is a rich and vibrant debate in the UK media about aid that doesn?t happen in the US media.

?This was an attempt, perhaps in hindsight not the best way, to get our message across.?

Mr Buston added that One employs nearly 120 people worldwide and so the £5.1million spent on wages would result in an average salary of about £42,500.

The charity grants for £64,000 were mostly handed over as prizes to the winners of One?s annual award for ground-breaking advocacy in Africa.

Another initiative spearheaded by Bono to help millions of Aids sufferers in Africa ? Red ? was criticised in 2007 after it was claimed it raised only £9million for the needy despite costing an estimated £50million to set up. Red disputed this figure.

A spokesman for One said the group was registered as a non-profit organisation in the US, although it did not benefit from British tax breaks for charities.

I heard about this on the radio this morning. YES, Bono was hitchhiking. YES, he was picked up by Oilers centre Gilbert Brule. NO, he was not arrested.

While this does look shady, in his partial defense I think his non-profits primary job is to go out and get other groups and different governments to help these people out. If he spent $15 million in donations yet was able to get three times that (I have no idea what the actual number is) in aid for these people it is money well spent.

I'm just saying that from my understanding he has never said he was raising money to give away, but instead to raise awareness and get help.

Which is better. If he raises $15 million and gives $14 million of it away or if he raises $15 million but uses it to then go out and $45 million in aid?

_Richard_ 06-03-2011 08:02 PM

admin fees.. very few charities don't do this.

rogueteens 06-03-2011 08:04 PM

I fucking hate that prick, i'll be having a party the day Bono's swollen head finally explodes.

rowan 06-03-2011 08:20 PM

I find it hard to believe that Bono would go for a walk only with an "assistant"

Wouldn't he have an entourage full of ass kissers and yes men to follow him everywhere?
