If you use a wireless mouse, you are in for some real trouble!
Say hello to carpal tunnel!
I was going to get this mouse: http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/...000-large.jpeg Until my doctor advised against it. He said most of his patients that have symptoms of carpal tunnel and work with a computer all day often are using a wireless mouse. Because the batteries are much heavier than a wired mouse it stretches the tendons harder and pulls the nerves against the wall of the carpal tunnel. He suggested finding the lightest wired mouse I can find and he did say the design of this mouse was good (except for the batteries). So anyone know of a wired mouse like this one? |
What bit is the carpal tunnel (serious question)?
|
I have a wireless with heavy batteries in It :(
|
All stuides into that field in this country shows that carpal tunnel syndrome is temporary :)
|
I have carpal tunnel syndrom :( and I'm only 24
I use this: http://www.everythingusb.com/images/...kball_news.jpg It brakes yearly, thank god for the 5 year warrenty, my 3rd mouse is in the mail, they replaced it free of charge twice, meanwhile I use my gf's mouse I bought her, she loves it and hates me for taking it away for a while.... http://www.jeffsreviews.com/Images/c...ring%20sml.gif |
Trackballs are good, I love my logitech marble. Don't love all the shit logitech installs with it (100 mb for mouse drivers? Are you kidding me?) but whaddaya gonna do.
The damage does heal but it takes a long time, just like it's years to pile up, it's years for it to go away, and you have to keep using the computer all the time so if you're adding more wear and tear you'll never get better. The carpal tunnel is in the wrist, a small tube where the nerves and tendons go through, if you put pressure on the hand while moving it they rub raw (Simplified explanation) I also use the program from rsiguard.com it has a lot of features to help with rsi |
i only have mouses with cable after we always had trouble at the office cause they interferred with each other
|
So my antique wireless mouse that holds two D batteries is bad?
|

I have just a regular old logitech wireless two button wheel mouse. Batteries in it aren't heavier than any other AA batteries out there, they're just rechargeable is all. So no worries here, and I've HAD very bad carpal tunnel in the past.
About 8 or 9 years ago I had it so bad I had to switch the mousepad over to the left. Had to mouse with the left hand for nearly a year while my right wrist healed. Moved it back after that and haven't had any serious issues with it since. Not into those freaky curvey-looking mice, btw. Ever hear of the KISS rule? "Keep It Simple Stupid" I follow that rule religiously. |
how much do batteries weight? 20 grams?
your doc is a limp-wristed pussy. |
<--- only uses wired mouses and keyboards anyway.
|
I just masturbate daily to keep my wrist healthy.

You should seriously consider a trackball. You need to get used to them for a few days but after that you never want something else. Another good thing is that you can really rest your whole arm on the desk. You don't need to lift it to move your mouse.
Obviously, regular masturbation keeps your hand and arm healthy. ;-) |
That would explain a lot. My right hand has been f'ed up for a few years...

My wife hates it, because it doesn't fit her hand and is "heavy" as you suggest I have it because my desks are glass-topped and I don't like cables cluttering them up... Having to put fresh AA batteries in the devices half-a-dozen times a year sucks though |

the only thing better would be a bluetooth marble for my media pc http://www.hydroponicsonline.com/sto...0608424788.jpg |
I've tried wireless a couple of times over the years but always end up going back to wired because they just don't feel right with the weight.
|
I use a mini wired optical, tried a few different ones including the track ball , didnt really care for them:thumbsup
|
I've had carpal tunnel for a long time and it has never really bothered me all that much. I wouldn't worry about it all that much. Just eat anti-inflammatory foods or something.
|
I have a friend who had it, and he said his doctor opened up his wrist a bit, snipped something, sewed him back up and a few weeks of healing later he said it never bothered him again.
I've also seen little metal tubes they put in to protect the walls from getting inflamed from rubbing. |
i like wireless

Anyone use a trackball and also use Photoshop for editing that includes masking and selecting using the Polygonal Lasso?
How does it do in that situation? |
I don't :)
|
wireless mouses are also glitchy; no need for that kind of FRUSTRATION!

All of the wireless mice I've seen are noticeably smaller than the wired version, could that have something to do with it?
|
I hated my wireless mouse with passion even though I paid quite a few bucks for a good one. It is "high precision," which meant that I had to spend like 20 seconds every time I wanted to move the cursor where I wanted it; played with the settings forever to no avail and then tossed it...
Right now I am wired and happy... |
I prefer any mouse with a "double click" button near the scrolling wheel.
|
If you don't want carpal tunnel problems, then don't use a mouse at all.
|
Logitech G9 Laser Mouse, the best mouse money can buy :) It comes with weights, but you can take them out and make it pretty light.

Wacom tablet for the win. 1 click double click using the pen's rocker switch which saves 50% of your mouse clicks too! Think about it your hand is so used to holding a pen, there is no burden on the carpal tunnel nerves.
|
Interesting info, yet still using a wireless.

turn up the sensitivity so you only have to move an inch left or right to cross your screens? It's all about the finger movements, not the wrist.
That said, I used a trackball Kensington for a few years and loved it to bits. :) |
