Why does America have so many kooks?
 

It occurs to me that the vast majority if not all of these Doomsday/End Days fads all originate in the United States. Americans laugh and mock these Islamic radicals who blow things up to get their 40 virgins in Heaven but meanwhile look at all the kooks in the US who believe equally nutty things. You don't see kooks on this level in other western democracies like Canada, UK, Australia etc do you?

The difference is that you have a disproportionate amount of news about America than you do other countries.

that's what i am thinking, though I do think there really are more fundamentalist religious kooks in the US South than in any other developed country. And a media who loves to make money by making big stories out of anything - kooks are an industry in the US. TV shows, radio shows, websites, books ...........

I don't disagree with any of that. The US is all about making money from anything, even the hopelessly retarded.

I think that in this era of the 24hr news cycle and infotainment, idiots get more attention than non-idiots, because idiots are entertaining.. thus, adding to the perception of a disproportionate number of idiots.

Think about this... almost anytime you see any American being interviewed on TV about world events, politics etc.. its almost NEVER an intelligent, educated person giving a thought provoking, well thought out and well reasoned opinion, but rather a backwards dumbass or some ghetto idiot saying something retarded. American news does this, foreign news does this in America X10. And by the way, I don't notice American news doing this to other countries in the way other countries do it to America.

We have over 300 million people with different backgrounds. Most of our ancestors moved here because their home countries looked poorly on their beliefs. People still move here because of religious persecution.
