Why do we need an opt out process for XXX?

Why do we need an opt out process for XXX? And why should anyone pay for it?

Why would the folks at Ebay want to pay $300 to "block out" ebay.xxx when instead they can just wait for someone to buy it and then sue them for a zillion bucks?

Chris 05-16-2011 03:32 PM

another source for money...

the opt-out should be free if you are a trademark holder imo

u-Bob 05-16-2011 03:34 PM

We don't need it. The ICM wants you to believe we need it. Just another scam. :(

beerptrol 05-16-2011 03:42 PM

they need the money to grease alot of wheels. Joan's back alley cock sucking can only get them so far

My guess would be they are figuring it would cost much more than $300 to sue, and that is why they feel they can gank people with a fat fee. $300/$600, etc.

I'm assuming ebay would have to pay their lawyer more than that to even start on the case. Of course. And that is their logic.

Doesn't make it ok, or that it is going to work out though! They're being rather greedy. I don't see how it is going to happen that way. Plus it is quite complicated.

"Pay us money or we will ......"

Sounds like extortion.

Herd 05-16-2011 04:27 PM

Whats weird is how this is going to work for mainstream.

If u are legit movie company and u pay ICM's protection money, so some moron wont put words boob or dildo in your title, u have to buy each domain for all different movies u own? For all future new release titles?

Seems crazy a porno company would charge "legit" businesses to register domains, "or else we make it a slut and butt site".

Maybe not much sympathy, extorting porn webmasters, but to extort "legit" businesses doesnt seem like positive publicity.

i'd like to see some big corps set up and sue the hell out of lawley and stop the blackmail.

If concerned and want to shake things up, go to as many fortune 500 companies as you have time for and alert them to this as an "anonymous stockholder concerned about any revenue being paid to dot-xxx that might be viewed as extortion by the SEC". Send links to the Xbiz article. That will make the ground rumble in a hurry, as most mainstream corps have no idea this is about to come up and bite them.

Cheers

Up to $650 for a .xxx domain - or to keep your name off one

cherrylula 05-16-2011 05:37 PM

I really don't see how that is going to work out. :1orglaugh

The people who made up that idea have big dreams! That's for sure. lol

Fletch XXX 05-16-2011 05:47 PM

to ebay 600 bones is nothing

GetSCORECash 05-16-2011 06:00 PM

my fault.
i am old and hit the wrong button.....

Herd 05-16-2011 06:13 PM

Yes because ebay is in the business, along with anyone else in the world that owns a trademark, to pay hundreds of dollars to a pornography company so they can "protect" them.

Yeah good luck with that.

Redrob 05-16-2011 06:35 PM

Do you get a t-shirt or coffee cup with a .XXX registration at that price?

Maybe a reach-around at least?

I'd certainly hope so.

There are sites that will fight back imo. Facebook sends mail from the big dawgs to the small fries fram what ive read. I dont think they will pay a cent.

ottopottomouse 05-17-2011 03:34 AM

Its a nice way of catching in people who would have no intention of buying it but own a trademarked word.

Does come across as exactly the same as all the emails saying "the .com of your .co.uk domain is available and someone other than you wants to buy it. just checking you don't want it first at 10x it's value....." That works well enough i regularly have to waste loads of time explaining to people its bullshit :(
