Most nations would reconize a ship sailing under their flag as an extension of their territory. And thus, someone born in or on your territory, automatically becomes a citizen of thatnation. But in reconizing that you may be an American who temporarily are cruising an a Bahamas registered ship, most nations offer their citizens to also make their own natural children citizens from birth.

So in most cases, it would be a situation where the parents would be offered a choice of dual citizenship or to pick either one of the two for the new born.

It really does not matter as long as you're not the father. :winkwink:

Doesnt matter where IMO.. If an American woman gives a birth while being on a vaccation in China, do you think the baby will be Chinese? I think it depends on the mother.

it depends on the laws of where she is...
it instead of China the children was born in Japan the children would not be Japanese (that is for sure), the children would have either fathers or mother nationality...

I'd be more concerned about why the hell she was on a boat in the middle of the ocean if she was nine months pregnant?

I believe you are wrong. I was born on a navy base in Japan, and when I turned 18, I had the choice of US or Japanese citizenship. I received the paperwork in the mail the same day I received the information about the US draft.

Correct, you had the choice, but its impossible to FORCE nationality based on where were you born.. bullshit. Look at the minorities living in each European country.. they would not exist.

Actually, that is exactly correct. The baby would have to then apply for dual citizenship in the US to go along with its canadian citizenship.

This is the reason that so many people illegally enter the US when they are 9 months pregnant. Doesn't matter the nationality of the parents, the baby is a US citizen. They call them "anchor babies" since once the baby is born here, and therefore is a US citizen, then the parents get to stay also, even though they came in illegally in the first place.
