What was Duke Ellington mean?

I'm very curious and untill now I haven't know what was Duke Ellington mean with his words:
Quote:

Nothing can be worse than to have somebody look down his nose with a flatted fifth"
Anyone knows what his mean all about?

Parallel chords and tritone melodies which comprise the "flatted fifth" in jazz and blues are oftentimes looked down upon and I think it is a result of what eventually became known as Bop. Most of the time, it just doesn't sound good.

That's about all I can offer.. I've never read that quote before and have been played blues and jazz for 10+ years.

Yep, what he said. In other words, Duke was saying fuck you to the haterz.

It's also a hand gesture:

"Giving the sign of the flatted fifth, a raised open hand"
