After 4 years as the most valuable brand in the World, Google has been replaced by Apple at the top spot.

Why was Google ever considered to be a better brand than Apple?

Google slaps it's name on all types of crap and nobody uses it. Apple can put it's brand on a cardboard box and people will stand in line to buy it.

Google has a lot of popularity, but it's brand never elicited any loyalty from people anywhere near that of Apple.

besides the Nexus phone, I dont think Google offers any tangible goods with their name on it.

IMO this is not an apples to apples comparison.... no pun intended. Your comparing a large internet brand to a large product brand. Apple doesnt have a search engine, Apple doesnt offer advertising to ANY viewer with a computer, etc

You make a valid point, but the article compared the two so I was going with that.

But overall, brands are compared across sectors all the time. Usually it's based on recognition and overall attitudes toward the brand, not specific products. Clearly, looking at internet only brands, Google would probably be number one.

Ok, I get Apple. They're coming up on 40 years in the biz and have long since established themselves. But how the fk does a company that's like 10yrs old that doesn't even make a tangible product outside of t-shirts and coffee mugs come from out of nowhere and hold to spot for FOUR years running?

I have a Google Nexus S phone and showing the Google logo on its back make people say OOOooooh about it, more then seeing the apple logo, at the moment.
Actually I got it because can play flash 10.2 on opera, firefox and stock browser including my own cam sites which is useful for work too, but the Google logo looks cool.
My Apple iphone is full of dust somewhere in my office - was good for rpg korean games.

impressive for sure. Google is right there, neck and neck still. I would have to think as more android phones/tablets are released this will only get them back to the top.
