Ouch! My Cable Company Rapes Me For DVRs

I must of had some promo going and looked at my bill today and I'm getting raped over $50/mo for 4 DVRs

So I call them and ask WTF is this bullshit and they said I should of received a notice that the price of the multiroom DVR system is going up... uhhh, no I didn't only to find them say "oh, well maybe you didnt because you have electronic billing and it may have gone out by email" WHAT? I "may" have gotten it and you just raise my bill by over $30/mo? Fuck that.

Now the deal is, ALL DVR's in your home are automatically setup for multi-room, which is stupid because I only have it on as background noise in my office and sometimes when Im working out in my basement and want to watch something that is on. 2 of the 4 (office and basement) are not even DVRs but since you can record on the main DVR, they consider them DVRs anyway.

I'm thinking of dumping them all and just getting TiVos. I have one in my living room, but only downside is I can not get OnDemand on TiVo... damn choices

can u buy the equipment instead of renting it

Sly 05-05-2011 09:49 AM

4 DVRs seems a bit excessive anyway?

But yeh, cable companies blow.

I'm curious what they claim the increase was based on. The equipment sitting in your house did not suddenly increase in price.

I can buy a TiVo with a 2 year commitment for $2 more per month and Its mine to keep. They have a promo for TiVo and service, but I can not buy the equipment from Verizon

4 TVs so I need 4 cable boxes. The old way was $6/mo for rental of a basic box and $12/mo for DVR and $15/mo for multi room and $10/mo for every other box or $12 for MR DVR.

So before, I had 1 MR DVR @ $15 and 1 MR Box at $10 and 2 regular boxes at $6. Now its $19.95/mo for first MR DVR and $10 for every non DVR and $15 for every DVR box. I had a promo where I was getting two boxes for free, so I was saving $12/mo.

I have 2 DVRs and 2 non DVRs so my bill is almost $53 just to RENT!

However, they made a change that now ALL boxes are now multi room compatible, similar to Dish or Direct TV

If I buy the TiVo's, I already have 2 now and service is $12.95/mo. I called and asked if I add 4 can I get a discount and the guy told me for the other 2 would be $9.95/mo. So I'm looking at $15/mo for the premiere box (newest one they have) $12 for the HD box and $9.95 x 2... $48.80 per month in TiVo fees...

OHHHHH, but i have to rent cable cards at $3.95 each

I'm fucked either way. What happened to the days were you got free TV?

Get rid of cable and hook your computer up to your TV. We haven't had cable in years and I don't plan on getting it ever again.

TiVo is infinitely superior to cable company DVR systems. You will enjoy the TiVo interface and features way more and, at least with Time Warner cable, I still can watch On Demand, I just have to do it with the cable company remote (not the TiVo one) on channel 1. On Demand is a little glitchy this way, but the most annoying thing about it is that the interface is so clunky, given that I am used to TiVo.

Have two DVRs and love it. I no longer worry about watching stuff when it's on. Everything is recorded. In fact, Justified season finale was on last night, can't wait to watch it.

Or catch it on Hulu much cheaper:

What cable company are you referring to? That's an inportant detail the o.p. left out of the story. The various cable companies have wildly different policies. I got my HD DVR free from DirecTV and it works as well or better than the standard defnition Tivo device I used to use.

I can't stand cable companies. They charge up the butt for everything!

My cable company is ~10/mo per box extra for DVR and as far as i'm aware they also do not do multi-room.

Of course you're only "timeshifting" shows broadcast on the channels that come with your basic cable package, not others on the extended package or pay channels like HBO & Showtime, right?

i said basic cable box not basic cable package

it the hardrive-less box that plays everything you subscribe to but doesn't allow you to record anything.

i subscribe to showcase, hbo, and the movie network

i subscribe to all the extend stations too

i pay for every show i timeshift, that the fucking point

no matter how much you want to make your Bullshit arguement that i support piracy it just not true.
