You ever notice when a thread loads slow?

It's not GFY, it's someones sig or image on a lame-ass server that slows everything down. But if you reload, it's fast because it's cached.

el_greco 01-23-2003 12:47 PM

All the time...

ElvisManson 01-23-2003 12:47 PM

I noticed your sig caused that to happen in this thread :winkwink:

Gutterboy 01-23-2003 12:47 PM

Yup.. GFY's been blazing since you put it on the new server.

Muff 01-23-2003 12:49 PM

I think it has alot todo with the ******* buttons... supposedly they will be hosting them soon so all those lame ass servers won't be a problem!

Jakke PNG 01-23-2003 01:01 PM

I don't cause that. Honest....even if I am a bit slow myself.

Sly_RJ 01-23-2003 01:03 PM

It's sig swap, the banners, flash, and buttons over 40kb.

They all add up.

Ambergirl 01-23-2003 01:03 PM

It occasionally slows down on my end...but upon reload usually screams in without a problem.

Honeyslut 01-23-2003 01:06 PM

You should make it text sigs only unless it's a paid advertiser..

Pipecrew 01-23-2003 01:08 PM

ban ******* please...... Its making these threads hang and its useless anyways

We've already implemented (a few days ago) the upload plan for users and more of them are taking advantage of it each day. Since then, as soon as we see that a button is loading slow we upload it to our server and show it from there. Also, when we notice a button coming up 404 we temporarily disable the button from showing until the owner corrects the problem. That of course only happens when the button is not being served from our end.

Regarding Flash buttons, we've disabled their use in ******* specifically because of the loading times.

We're working on more ways to improve the speed, and honestly right now they take no more time to load than any other buttons do. Most of the time no one would have any idea the button is being served by us unless they held their mouse over the sig. At that point the button has already done its job and attracted a viewer. :)

Yep, they basically kill a thread, I tried going to one of them, http://www.paysitedesign.com and the site doesn't even load.

Should I block the sigswag url?

If Lens feels that's necessary then it's fine by us. We go out of our way to help out the forums, and if that means we get banned at a few then so be it. The last thing we want to do is piss off the forum owners. Please read our FAQ though before jumping all over us. We do actually care. http://www.*******.com/faq.html

I'll second that

Nysus 01-23-2003 01:14 PM

******* is a new service, and it's beneficial to webmasters. I believe ******* is implementing a system to check to make sure signatures are loading properly.. and even possibly hosting buttons on their own servers..

Cheers,
Matt

Darin 01-23-2003 01:18 PM

******* has done great by me. Anyone who has a graphic button has the same problem, its not *******.

Im not seeing any load problems on my end.

I think it is a good program and will be even better when all of the buttons are on their servers. I wouldn't suggest banning it. (considering I use it :) ) but maybe Jak can make it mandatory that all current accounts upload the button to their servers and any new sign-ups aswell.

Well that about figures. Call up a thread asking if we slow things down, and our server starts burping, lol. Ah well. Murphy's Law I guess. :1orglaugh

LOL!!!

FATPad 01-23-2003 01:21 PM

I still can't believe there is even a system in place to rotate sigs on messageboards...

Yes.

On the rare occasions I do view and/or click sigs, it's because the person who has the sig is someone I know and/or respect in some way. Their referral is in some way valuable to me.

Why should some peckerhead who can't even be bothered posting on this board have his sig shown here anyways?

Go read there their site ******* If you have problem with someones site you're displaying you can contact them to have it removed from your account or possible the entire system.

By the way incase you didn't notice you are about 100 pixels off on the allowed sig limits.
:)

Novel idea: Maybe ******* should go offline voluntarily until they can ensure that their sigs don't make the board drag?

And by the way, I'm on 1MBPS DSL and this thread just took almost a minute to load. The threads without *******pers are fine.

We are indeed seeing slowdowns right now, because of some type of server burp. See my Murphy's Law post above. Usually the server is blazing (SinHost) but of course today it's slowing down! :1orglaugh

Nah. GoogleAnswers is doing good a job at that.

I meant it as a general statement for signatures not totally directed at you... But you do promote another site with your sig.

Sorry. ;) Been a crappy day. My pipes froze overnight and I spent 3 hours moving furniture, heating up pipes and checking to see if any of them burst while frozen.

I didn't mean you can't list other sites in your sig. But that's my sig being shown where i post...not a random sig displaying someone else's referral code who's never ever been to GFY.

I also know the guy who owns the site in my sig. ;) It's a good program with good sites. :) That's the only reason it's there. ;)

Sorry, for snapping again. ;)

A little piss never hurt anyone. :)

ScoreCash is a good program I use some of their hosted galleries.

loads fine for me, I have sigs turned OFF for this reason.

Go to profile options, click "no" on view sigs, and the problem is fixed.

JimmyReject 01-23-2003 02:32 PM

Yeah, i've cut coming to GFY to only 20 times a day because of the load speed.

cherrylula 01-23-2003 02:34 PM

nah. not with the way people spam things around here.

Brad Mitchell 01-23-2003 05:04 PM

Wow! Well this is funny, especially considering my comments above.

As it turns out... I host ******* and I didn't even know it. It's been residing on one of my SinHost virtual servers... big surprise! I have a hard time keeping track of everything we host as the list of client sites now surpasses 6000. Between a traded password and crazy TGP traffic, that server quadrupled it's normal activity today which might have accounted for some performance degredation.

I've spoken with Jak and it appears that many of the banners in ******* are currently hosted by the advertisers, not by the service itself and therefore not on my network.

Personally, I think that ******* is an excellent concept and it would be a shame if it didn't continue to grow! In order to make it a more effective service I am going to work with Jak to remedy the situation.

******* will be moved to a dedicated server in the coming week and I will make sure that it is outfitted with the proper resources. In order for ******* to maintain a high level performance and quality I've requested that all of the advertising ultimately reside on my servers. I don't want ads hosted elsewhere to be misconstrued as a representation of my service.

I visit and post here on GFY as much as the most active users do. Accordingly, I'm going to make sure that ******* develops as a useful resource and never as a nuisance to the communities that we all visit and post to.

Cheers,

Brad

P.S. - If you think ******* is a bad idea, Go Fuck Yourself!

gothweb 01-23-2003 05:09 PM
