china and adult sites?

going to china in a couple weeks, is wifi common there? Its a vacation but gotta do the necessary maintenance work on my sites so im taking my netbook with me.
I have alot of non adult projects, but i also have to work a bit on my adult sites while im there. Is is possible or do i have to use slow ass proxies there?

another thing. Do the customs check your laptop? I assume they dont but you never know in this horrible ever changing for the worst big brother is watching you world.

truecrypt + some vpn (but chances are most commercial solutions will already be blocked)?

HomerSimpson 04-26-2011 03:30 AM

depends much on where are you going, since it's a very big country and country of differences... in bigger cities you'll have no bigger problem finding wifi... however using a VPN is recommended in case of porn in China...

nico-t 04-26-2011 03:51 AM

is truecrypt really necessary? Dont have that much on my laptop.

and is there a simple beginners guide to using a VPN because i dont know anything about that.

AtlantisCash 04-26-2011 04:01 AM

off topic though, i believe China will be the most free and actually a wonderful place if they stop filtering porn there.

think a country that's capital friendly, low taxes, wead is not mutch problem, night life is fun, You wouldn't see mutch religious nutcases wanting to save your soul, but mostly atheists or spiritualists or far east philosophies, what would you want more?

Vendot 04-26-2011 04:14 AM

Of course.......... Wifi is extremely common place there.

If youre in a decent hotel, its almost guaranteed but youll probably also have wifi or wire access from your hotel room. Ive been to china a few times and they never checked my laptop. The whole big brother thing in china is a bit overdone but if they catch you with porn, theyll confiscate your dick.

2MuchMark 04-26-2011 04:28 AM

Access to porn is blocked in China. During the last visit, one of our programmers had to use proxies to access our servers.

What I would do is:
Ask your host to run sshd on port 443 on one of your servers.
When in china, use putty to connect to port 443 on your server (If you are forced to use a proxy by some local Chinese isp, it probably won't block the connection since you are using the same port webservers normally use for SSL connections... putty can tunnel through proxies using the CONNECT method.) and create a tunnel.

grumpy 04-26-2011 08:36 AM

why, why do you wanna work on porn from china. You know its big trouble when you get caught.

nico-t 04-26-2011 08:43 AM

thanks u-bob im gonna look into that method.

and grumpy, i wont have physical porn on it, just text files, excel sheets etc: files i use to manage and build hardlink trades, thats the only thing i plan on doing a bit while im there.

so when it creates a tunnel through my server, i have a vpn connection? Or is this something else? Im reading some stuff now but its all pretty much not understandable to me...

where will you be going in China ? I usually am around Hong Kong/ Macau / Guangzhou

china is awesome .. and you should not have any problems working a bit on your sites using a good VPN service

right now summer has started already in the area I am usually in so make sure you are prepared for the heat !

AtlantisCash 04-27-2011 08:12 AM

Chinese gov's censorship does not apply on Hong kong right?

czarina 04-27-2011 08:51 AM

why would you risk having porn in your computer or browsing porn in a country where it's highly illegal AND where you can spend the rest of your life in jail for doing it?

Take a real vacation and leave your computer behind!

this is not quite true .. the thing you can go to jail for is SELLING adult material to Chinese citizens in China ... so having porn on your pc or browsing porn is not an issue :2 cents:

deputy - right now shanghai, beijing and the island hainan are on the list.. wanted to go to hong kong but got a single entry visa, ive read that HK is a part of china, but isnt really.. lol. Didnt know that. So id need another visa for china to catch my plane back if i visit HK on my trip. But maybe ill go there anyway and arrange a 2nd visa there. Dont really have a tight planning.

like deputy said and i can confirm by reading alot on the web, it isnt as bad as you say in your post. And i found a site where you can check if an url is blocked in china and some of my adult sites arent even blocked there.

For my mainstream sites here in NL is use google.nl alot, and that one IS banned... so id still need a vpn or w/e even if i wont be working on my adult related stuff.

i did some looking around and i think ill be going the easy route and pay for a vpn service... Puremeds-J, i also came across that one, it looks like a good option but i also read that the chinese gov is cracking down on the well known vpn services right now. Found another which looks like a good one (astrill vpn) i think ill go with that one.

More vpn suggestions which still work in china are welcome ofcourse.

Sounds good .. in a way Beijing and Shanghai are the typical tourist hot spots where everybody goes but that doesn't mean they are not well worth it for a visit . especially if it is your first time going to China you probably really should do these

Hainan island should be great aswell , I have been there once to Haikou ,but I think you will probably be going to Sanya ?

I dont know if you like gambling / poker but if you do I would suggest you visit Macau aswell. You could combine that with a Hong Kong visit as they are one hour apart by ferry. Wich is a very easy/ good connection.

You will need a second visa or a double entry visa if you need to head back to China. But that should not really be an issue. If you have not gotten your visa yet you can first try and get a double entry visa and explain that you are planning on visiting Hong Kong aswell. Normally they will just give you a 2*30 day visa to China. Meaning you get 30 days on first entry and then you need to leave / go to Hong Kong. Then when you get back to China you will have another 30 days.
:thumbsup
