I got hurt by the Panda update... My bounce rate is decent though, or so I thought.

18teens 04-14-2011 05:41 PM

Good tips. Thanks for sharing.

sadiedazzle 04-14-2011 05:48 PM

Hmm...well I would say that if your site got a major hit from google's new panda then you probably were doing some naughty in your seo.

can someone post any link from any google source that bounce rated is actually part of the panda update?

I haven't found one yet. Just a lot of "I think" or "We believe" type articles.

cybermike 04-14-2011 06:16 PM

Same here fuze :(

I would say you need to go read around the webmaster boards and count how many seasoned webmasters that have been hit and are saying there's absolutely no rhyme or reason to it.

Agent 488 04-14-2011 06:19 PM

read:

"Oddly, no video-centric sites seem to have been in the top 100 losers, yet four show up in the top 20 winners."

http://www.reelseo.com/vimeo-youtube...pdate-hits-uk/

it truly was the "tube update."

Agent 488 04-14-2011 06:22 PM

http://blog.searchmetrics.com/us/201...lls-out-to-uk/

interesting as well.

~Ray 04-14-2011 07:02 PM

tube sites update daily, therefore a surfer who comes back tomorrow will find something new, stay and again help the bounce rate.

No new content? Repeat visitors will kill your bounce rate.

Google likes high backlinks + low bounce rates

If you need backlinks, let me know. The bounce rate is up to you and your testing and seo skills.

Agent 488 04-14-2011 07:04 PM

i guess bounce rate and the panda update will be one of those things that pass into seo mythology without any actual basis in fact.

FlexxAeon 04-14-2011 09:52 PM

Those pointers are pretty basic and we should be following most of them anyway.

But Solution #3 Make your pages longer hits the average adult blogger hard. We may all post 'quality' text, but it's about selling membership to a porn site and we know that the surfer really wants to see some videos or more pics (unless they are into reading erotica rather than jerking off at the first opportunity).
We also know that too many delaying tactics will have the surfer closing our site and looking somewhere else for his quick fix (probably a tube site). So it's striking a balance between not getting hit by google and actually making a sale. And this update has made it harder to do that.

EXACTLY what i've been fighting with for several years now. :1orglaugh it has been a PITA writing all the copy i have, and i'd bitch and cry every day. but it was paying off in SE traffic.

G done went and fucked that off

Nice info, I got a couple people that I'm directing to this thread :)

this kind of shit hurts my feelings. especially when its an all unique content site with a unique design and the works. everything i thought was pretty SEO sound before this update. good link structure, unique content, relevant backlinks, the works. it's not even a blog it's my own personal script and no it isn't a tube site. from the sounds of this thread i guess i need to switch over to the video format.

now it's basically shit. traffic is down to like 1/6th of what it was before the 2nd or something of this month.

dynastoned 04-14-2011 11:25 PM

lol reminds me of the stock market or something with all the red numbers

It's probably right next to the list of 11 herbs and spices in KFC or, if you're lucky, the ingredients for Classic Coke :winkwink::thumbsup

Jack Sparrow 04-15-2011 12:57 AM

Ive got a bouncerate of 37% but still got hit hard.

IllTestYourGirls 04-15-2011 04:50 AM

Can someone explain something to me. (making up numbers) In google analytics one of my sites 'avg time on site' is 2:30 but the 'avg time on pages' is 7:30

How does google calculate that?

Another site of mine with a higher bounce rate just doubled in google traffic. So I do not know how much that bounce rate is factoring in.

FlexxAeon 04-15-2011 09:51 AM

the panda likes the tubes

Amongst the big winners are four porn websites; Siteslike.com, Youjizz.com, Perfectgirls.net and Keezmovies.com (sorry no links to them) which for unknown reasons are considered by Google as being more trustworthy than pcadvisor.co.uk, one of the biggest technology websites in the UK.

A drop in traffic sucks. Good luck getting more traffic.

Agent 488 04-15-2011 10:00 AM

the people who are crying |bounce rate| have no proof and are just trying to sell their content writing services.

like third world written content is going to keep a surfer on your page anyway.

FlexxAeon 04-15-2011 12:22 PM

Strange 'update like' behaviors

fiddling with the keyword i've been page 1 on for the longest:

- my top result is on page 13, but it's the /page/2/ of my blog :error
- my homepage result doesn't show up until about page 46 :1orglaugh
- while checking G (just thru browser), homepage came up as #3. refreshed and it was gone :error

not even sure if i should be tearing my sites apart now or just continue business as usual and wait for the dust to settle

SmokeyTheBear 04-15-2011 12:27 PM

people try to outthink google too much..

google is just swapping it up to keep seo'ers in the dark..

once you have a good recipe for seo , it is too easy to rinse and repeat. they swap it up to keep people from having good recipes.

best advice is .. cook some steak under , cook some steak over, cook some steak just right , cover all your bases

Had the same, a site was showing up on page 1 for the keyphrase I was after but only a subpage, not the home page - and half the time I checked it would be there, then the next time it wouldn't. Today I've swapped to using smaller banners to see what effect that has, now it's gone completely :(

different keywords have different bounce rates.

Once site may rank with 30% for "sex toys"
While another site will not rank with 19% for "porn"

The good news is that many, not all, sites who got hit are registering some sort of recovery by now. The dip lasted, for some of these sites, 9 to 14 days. Others are still way down.
