What would you like to read in an E Book about shooting porn?

I'm in the middle of writing an E Book on shooting porn and would welcome some ideas on what people think would be useful to know. It's just from my POV and to give people good foundations and advice. There are many ways to shoot good porn.

It will cover from amateur on a small budget to top end on a limitless budget, and for the hobbiest and the pro.

This is what I'm covering.

What do you need.
Equipment, props, locations, etc.

Budget

What to shoot.
Deciding what to shoot and why.
What niche or niches, what are your capabilities and limits, how much can you do and most importantly is how to learn what to shoot.

Why do you want to shoot porn?
Identify your aims and targets.
This will allow you to set your targets and check your progress.
Do you want to shoot pornography, erotica or photography?

How to find models.
Best places to find models, motivating models.
One of the things so many find hard and professionals find it's the easiest part of their job. Where to find them, how to approach them and most importantly is to establish trust.

Where to start.
How to prepare yourself to shoot good porn and make it successful.
You will need a plan of action, this will help you build the right knowledge and experience.

How to use the equipment.
How to practice with the equipment so you do not look foolish and get the best from your models.
Lighting.
Technique is everything when shooting, here I will tell you how to be master of the equipment, build your technique using it and find out before you start paying expensive models how to benefit from mistakes.

Interview and castings.
How to run a professional casting, prepare the ground for the future shoots.
Everything is up for grabs at a casting.
How to establish respect, understanding and trust.

Preparation for a shoot.
Get the groundwork right and the shoot can be a breeze.
Get it wrong and it will be hard work.
Knowing what you want before you start.
Planning out the day.
Having the right tools, props and support.

Greeting models on the day and preparing them.
Looking professional, prepared and relaxed is easy. If you know how.

Posing and building a scene.

And a few other things.

So far it's 12,500 words and growing every day.

Will spam it here when it's ready.

I want others views and what they want to learn, maybe just a different way of doing things.

Will it cover digital cameras with interchangable lenses ?

No my E Book will be about shooting porn. If you think it depends on knowing what the latest cameras can do you're sadly mistaken.

The part about equipment is very very small, because it will change a week after it's written. The part about shooting porn is very very long, because that has changed very little.

You have a lot to say about shooting porn, so here's a challenge to put your money where your mouth is. Hit me up on ICQ or Skype with a login to your site and I will write an unbiased report on the porn content of the site, will cover lighting, angles and exposures. Will not say squat about you using the latest camera.

Are you brave enough?

Will you let me post it here?

I will only post the review with your permission.

The book should be called

Cherry asked if you would cover camera kit released in the last 20 years and you said:

I will in fact read Paul's book.

I thought for a very short while about going into equipment and reading what I written over the last few years it's obvious it's pretty well impossible to write something on the actual equipment without it being outdated the moment you write it.

20 years ago equipment changed very little. Today it changes almost monthly. So I have advised in the Ebook for people to research for themselves this part. Given some general guidelines, but not in depth about the actual equipment.

Items like lighting, using a light meter, Audio quality and other things I have covered because they have not changed much. In video we now have Florescent Kino Flo instead of just Tungsten, in strobe little has changed really. It's still essential to control lighting, to know what your lights are doing to your image and how to get different effect. How to do it on the cheap and doing it to the top level.

Audio is also another thing that has changed little. Mics have improved in quality but little, we've had radio mics for ages.

Models have changed a lot in 30 years. And that I have covered. In depth.

ottopottomouse 04-10-2011 03:14 AM

Will it have 1 chapter on how good the old days were and everything now is crap followed by 27 chapters on how to faff about delaying filming 1 scene?

fris 04-10-2011 03:21 AM

dont you think you should leave this up to someone whos more qualified?

icymelon 04-10-2011 03:25 AM

how to direct the models to get a good performance and how to shoot them so they look their best. thats the gotta know stuff that would make me want to buy it

Paul Markham 04-10-2011 04:23 AM

Actually Cherry has come up with a good point. So I have thought out the solution.

There will be a question/answer forum for purchasers of the Ebook to join.

In there we can have a section that lists a site like this http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/timeline.asp

With reviews of the latest cameras.

Then people can ask questions, with the newest equipment and how to use it I will be out of date. But this is about the actual shooting of porn and that hasn't changed much since I bought a Canon A1.

Cherry7 04-10-2011 09:34 AM

You missed the point. You told me that with DSLRs you don't change lenses...

Quite a shocking statement for someone who...

1) Says you cannot learn from books
2) cannot learn from courses
3) is about to write a book to teach us all.

I do not have any ambition to teach people here how to do anything and consider our site to be on the fringe of porn...

If people ask for an opinion I will willingly add my 2 cents....

You have this theory that there is a subject separate from photography and film making call porn. I would only agree in the same way is making a western is different from making a romantic comedy. You have to approach the new subject with a degree of inteligence.

I do not understand why on one hand you want to tell people how much you know about porn but brag on how little you know on photography or film making. You live in a country with a great photographic and cinema tradition and beautiful woman. Would expect more.

The book would not cover new equipment but should it not cover basic technical / artistic principles ?

F stops, shutters speeds, exposure, ASA .....Key lights / fill lights, color tempreture, Wide angle lenses, long lenses perspective, history of erotic images religous painting to Movies

A example could be the importance of a Matt Box and how by stoppng random light entering the lens and lowering the contrast and quality of the image the picture can be improved.

But I gather people are happy doing what the do...

So opening the university of porn may be premature

plsureking 04-10-2011 09:46 AM

i hope its free because no one is going to buy it.

:2 cents:

Caligari 04-10-2011 09:51 AM

That is a very good idea Paul, also it would be interesting (and make the book more lively) to add some anecdotal material like funny things that happened on set, bad day on the set, being prepared for diasaster (i.e. having some back up when you need it whether its equipment, another model if the model suddenly craps out on you etc)

Also lets say a key light craps out on you and you cant replace it in time, how do you trouble shoot on a set when you have to do the shoot now.

And yes you are quite right equipment is secondary, it changes all the time so telling people what to shoot with is a waste of time.

And as usual Dv Times er i mean Damian J is on the scene with his trolling expertise.

CaptainHowdy 04-10-2011 09:52 AM

How to fínd good locations would be interesting

Ebooks are for people with little to no qualifications for writing an ACTUAL print book. This is the perfect setup, because it never has to pass the eyes of a real editor.

[QUOTE=Paul Markham;18045584] The part about shooting porn is very very long, because that has changed very littleQUOTE]

Maybe that is the problem, which you yourself have mentioned several times, that porn is the same old boring scene, again and again.

Porn has not changed, well, maybe it should. Because I for one find very little of it exciting.

This is a problem that goes back through the history of porn, the fact that it was semi legal ment that the thrill was just getting the forbidden fruit.

The magazines you worked for, the same old poses, same positions, same plastic feel. There was no good old days... except for a few french porn films that crossed the line..

The problem is not how to shoot more bland, flatly lit, girls pretending to wank but how to make something new and exciting to give us all a really good hard on.

DBS.US 04-10-2011 01:50 PM

Should cover legal areas and safety issues:2 cents:

Which is why I recommend using a light meter.

Producing porn is about many things. In largely this order.

Knowing and understanding your niche.

Knowing and understanding each model. People are all different learning how to handle unprofessional models of all personalities is very important.

Angles, sequence and theme of a shoot. If you don't know how to construct a porn scene in a way that is will capture the viewers imagination you're going to make a boring scene.

Understanding equipment. As things like lights, mics and light meters have changed very very little in the last 40 years there's little to learn from a book. Cameras are bought once every 3-4 years. Learning how to use the same camera isn't as hard as learning to get the best out of different models or knowing your niche.

Today a lot of people can use a camera, light a set and shoot naked people going through the motions. Hence all the bad porn out there. Few can sell in the top markets of porn.

Cherry when you've had a set published in Mayfair or a video bought by Wicked (or similar publishers) then come and talk about creating porn. You shoot for the Internet, for your own site, so selling it to yourself is a given and if you throw enough traffic at it you'll make a sign up. Maybe even a couple.

You couldn't sell to the top tiers of porn to make your sites content free and profitable before it was on the site. I can and did. Over and over and over again for over 10 years.

Thank you for a positive reply.

Yes a lot of it is about how to prevent or cope with a disaster. If a key light goes, you have 2 options. Start again or use the spare light you have with you. This has happened to me and I learnt by mistakes. If you're selling to a magazine or video company you can't keep going on. Unless you want to lose money.

Covering lots of things like periods, PMT, shaving rash, discharge, etc. Or just a model turning up in a bad mood.

The level of photography that earned me a living for decades, wouldn't of got me a job shooting weddings. People who don't understand pornographers use a camera like authors use a typewriter or computer, are clowns. Any one who can shoot Penthouse level and around there does know photography and won't be coming in to the porn market today. They'll be making $1,000s every day shooting weddings or similar.

So, if you are going to call me a liar, like you repeatedly do in your baseless, libelous, personal attacks at least don't provide me with the evidence to prove you wrong on the same bloody page Paul. Put a little effort, or else people will just think you are a lying stalker following me around the boards in a personal vendetta against me or something!!!

Hey Paul, serious challenge you won't be man enough to accept.

If you ever do write this pdf (maybe when you're done with the fictitious scene you're pretending to do for piracy money), I dare you to put it on a site where the number of downloads are publicly viewable, like scribd.

I dare you. Hahahah. Imagine if the world could see that only 6 people download it.

That's dead right it will be about shooting porn. So it will cover something about kit.

But as some today want porn shot on a mobile phone and others want it shot on a professional $35,000 camera. And probably more.

How can you write about what cameras to buy, advise on and keep it up to date.

I didn't lie and if you had a clue about shooting porn you would understand.

Patronising I might be, but to someone who can't put up a pass to their site because they're probably nervous, what should I be?

Shooting porn is 10% photography, 50% personality. Being able to get a model to do something is really hard and makes getting a camera to do something right child's play.

You probably learnt to market from a book, which is why you're crap at it and earn so little.

Learning about shooting porn is one of those things that can only be really learn in real experience and by trial and error. Because you're dealing with human beings. You need experience how to motivate, direct and control them. What works for 1 model is wasted on the next. I will give general directions on this. However it needs to be done in the real world. Can you learn to paint, play football, sell, and do a lot of other things from a book?

I don't want to teach people how to make better porn, I don't want them to do what I do... I don't see a big difference between on and offline porn. Mayfair just as mechanical and dull as online porn - yeah they got the exposure right.

I notice that you ignore points that you find inconvenient, I posted links to my photos and a film... That should give you an idea of my work...

The selling price will be in the hands of the publisher and me.

However creating a site with constantly updated info and discussion is a good idea. :thumbsup

Babymaker, maybe some instructional videos on the site would be a great idea. Again thanks.

If the trolls didn't keep bumping with their crap I wouldn't of got these ideas.

Thanks trolls.

Cherry I have just looked at http://www.blurb.com/books/1334167

It's good amateur art/erotic. It's in no way professional and not porn. Some of your mistakes in shooting are very basic. You will need to get my Ebook to learn more.

Things like cropping are very poor.

For instance the very first picture you cut off the girls hand and in lots of shots you crop out bits that should be in the picture. Second and third picture are also badly cropped. Good amateur content, never going to sell. And not in Mayfair, it's not good enough.

Bad posing is also a problem. You're trying to play at the top table with less ability than I have.

DON"T crop off a girls toes, shave of part of her elbow or knee or head, either make a very deliberate crop or include it in. When posing girls for this kind of work accentuate something, mostly curves. Looks also are important, Sultry, Teasing, Hard, Soft, Getting Grace to go through the motions doesn't cut it.

Then there are locations, shooting a girl in the forest is cheap. Some of your locations are wrong.

Study work by guys like Micheal Ancher, Hank Londoner and others to see what it takes.

Then adapt to yourself.

We do not aspire to be at your "top table" we are in a different house...

Professional meaning that you earn money from photography, it does not mean the photography is good, creative or interesting. Wedding photographers, passport photographers, police photographers. mayfair photographers all have to make routine photos of the same tech standards within narrow margins.

I do not mind people criticising our site, but my critique would be more severe than theirs-
That is because I know what is wrong, the compromises that have to be made with a very small crew and shooting 20 minutes a day instead of 2 minutes.

In my opinion, Paul, don't bother asking retards here, even tho Damian is pretty top notch mofo he seems to be acting harsh most of the time. Just write a book and sell it to the surfer as any other e-book do. There is no friends on this board, just trolls. Period. Thread closed.
