Granny cuts off country's internet
A GRANNY wielding a spade cut off the internet to an entire country while scavenging for copper.
Georgian police arrested the 75-year-old who single-handedly severed web connections to neighbouring Armenia with her shovel.
The elderly woman ? dubbed the 'spade hacker' ? had been digging for scrap metal in the village of Ksani when she struck a fibre-optic cable running between the two nations.
The cable serves both countries as well as Azerbaijan ? all three internet providers in Armenia were crippled for hours and services in all three countries were affected.
Georgian interior ministry spokesman Zura Gvenetadze said: "She found the cable while collecting scrap metal and cut it with a view to stealing it."
She faces up to three years in prison if convicted of damaging property in the impoverished ex-Soviet state.
But because of her age the authorities released her pending further enquiries.
The cable, owned by the Georgian railway network, is heavily protected but may have been exposed by heavy rain or landslides.
