ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast ? Fighters trying to install Ivory Coast's democratically elected president descended Thursday on its largest city and seat of power, poised for a final push to unseat entrenched ruler Laurent Gbagbo.

Forces backing Alassane Ouattara have overrun nearly 80 percent of the country as soldiers fled and towns fell in quick succession. The regular army put up almost no resistance during the four-day offensive, including in the ruler's hometown, where fighters broke into Gbagbo's compound and slept in his bed.

But they may face fierce resistance on the peninsula where the presidential palace is located, surrounded on all sides by a natural moat ? Abidjan's glassy lagoon.

...
But they did it all with a so called " no-fly zone " ( :1orglaugh ) .....

I'm just glad Didier Drogba left there and plays for Chelsea.

i don't recall them asking for u.s. help at any time in this decades long ordeal.

if the u.s. just swept in and *fixed* it, peeps like you would be bitching about that instead.

moreover, it's a circular argument to imply that because we go in and help in one place, we are supposed to, ready to, prepared for and can afford to, go in and fix anything anywhere.

They don't have oil. Plus it is none of our business. But I am sure if you are worried about it you (general use) could always buy a plane ticket there and help fight.

They may not have oil but most of the world's COCOA (the main ingredient for chocolate) comes from that country. That should count for something...

Crippling debt from industrialized countries, civil war, huge population growth and 50% unemployment.

hummmm....

The West African state of Ivory Coast is known more as an oil refining country rather than as an oil producing one. While it does not have the prolific offshore oil fields of Nigeria, it does possess a modest upstream oil industry.
