Hispanics have surpassed blacks as the nation's largest minority group, the Census Bureau said Tuesday.

The Latino population grew to 37 million in July 2001, up 4.7 percent from April 2000. The black population increased 2 percent during the same period, to 36.1 million.

Assuming that those numbers are true and the projections they suggest become reality and whites become a minority--so what?

Mexico has a majority mestizo population but with a very tiny white minority. Guess who runs the country. Guess who owns the economic and legal infrastructure.

There are tons of countries where an ethnic minority control the economic, legal, and social apparatus despite the demographic and electoral strength of the majority. Of course there are violent examples of this uneasy coexistence -- see Indonesia, Malaysia, and Idi Amin's Uganda. But there's also the example of Singapore.

Maybe the real concern is not whether white Americans will become an ethnic minority but whether the respect for the American way of life and American culture will become the minority view as well. This country successfully assimilated Europeans from cultural backgrounds that were very different from the Anglo Saxon Protestant orientation of its founders. The question is can it do the trick again with this new wave of immigrants.

Immigration needs a fucking street patrole.... I swear you could drive through Los Angeles and round up illegal immigrants by the busload. Not exaggerating in the least on this. And this is not limited to Mexicans either.

Maybe in Hollywood and the Valley. But most of that real estate is owned by people who live in West LA and the west side of the valley. And yep...they're mostly not Hispanic. :winkwink:

Bottom line is, as long as we still play by American rules then I'm cool. The moment we start using Mexican law or Mexican culture to play the game then that's when shit starts to get interesting.

I highly doubt the latter will come to pass since Mexicans, and most other immigrants, came here to escape the "Old Country's" corruption and the economic mess its political/cultural baggage produced. They came here to work in an American economy under an American system. Doesn't make sense to kill the system you crossed several rivers to become a part of?

Two things. First of all, isn't there some overlap between "hispanic" and "black"? Just wonder how that comes into play with such statistics.

More importantly, though, there is a larger minority. One that people often forget... Males. Slightly less than 50% of people are male, meaning we are about as large a minority as is mathematically possible.

Chicago has great Mexican food. I moved to Houston for a while expecting awesome mexican food and found only crap (although Texas all you can eat BBQ houses OMG yum!yum!) but Chicago has a ton of mexicans and solid little Mexico City neighborhoods and the food is great and cheap! Although one wonders about the hygiene in alot of these places. I don't mean to be biased but I have witnessed some serious healthcode violations like re-using the salsa that other customers dipped in..hmm ok so I had a few drinks..:thumbsup

That's because many of the Hispanics in Miami are Cuban upper and upper middle class that fled Castro's Cuba. Most were already skilled, white Spaniards, and more importantly, possessed middle class values when they got here. Quite a contrast from many Mexicans and Central Americans who were campesinos and border town dwellers before moving here. Hence the disparity in socioeconomic levels.

A good example of this would be comparing 1959 Cuban Americans with the Marielitos of the early 80's. Quite a big difference.

If you do a study of the Hispanics in Miami, you would see that NOW ( 2000's ) Cubans are not the majority of hispanics.. its a nice blend of colombians, argentinians, CENTRAL AMERICANS, etc..

So again.. sorry but I disagree... Yes Cubans were the first big group but now they are not the majority. :thumbsup

No. YOU are WRONG. Read my post again. I said "MANY" not "ALL" And if that's not enough, many of the the individuals in that blend of "Colombians, Argentinians, etc" you mentioned are already middle or upper class in their countries when they got here

When you look at the class levels and backgrounds of immigrants, Mexicans have the most diversity [read : thay have a large number of lower income and lower skilled workers] . One of the key reasons many Latinos in Miami are "professionals" is due to their class origin and starting capital upon migration to the US. And this also ties in with already existing Cuban-American capital.

It is an often repeated observation amongst demographics observers that the FURTHER a person immigrates from the higher their origination class/skill levels. This, of course, does not apply to refugees or political asylees. This accounts for AFRICANS' [ie., from continental Africa not african-americans] having a higher education/class level than many other ethnic groups.
