FYI there already are "Troops on the Ground"
Dont they need people do "tag" the targets with the lasers???
Right? |
what are you talking about?
|
the 90s called
i know there is a joke here... |
It was already released in the press about 2 weeks ago that special forces were already on the ground there from USA, France and British. Supposedly to train the rebels. Then a a team of British got captured, that made the news and then you didn't hear anything else about special forces there. I thought it was odd at the time.
|
That's what I was thinking last night - they were all going on about laser-guided bombs... so who's putting the laser on the target?

Need troops to point lazers at targets |
The sharks! They wear them on their freakin head!

I heard it on CNN i think |
Aside from laser targeting, what about coordinates? Wouldn't the coordinates of most of the permanent structures already be known or easily obtained? Now the moving targets, like tanks, that's a different story.

Seems they use gps and laser I guess? |
|
do we rly need to put a handheld laser spot on the palace and other hard target installations like missile defense targets? tomahawk tech can't do better?
do special forces teams count as troops? i was under the impression the covert recon teams are always in country. |
i'm sure the capability is there, i was just saying GPS is probably what they're using
i only completed the joke half way.. ;) |
i don't think you'll see troops on the ground unless they're recon. this same shit happened back in 1986 and at the time they were training us for a war on libyia but it was handled by air strikes. he's the biggest shit talker around but can't back it up. this will be weekend news.
no troops because there's nothing there we want or need. now if there was a considerable amount of oil there then i'm sure libyia would have flown a plane into one of our buildings by now and we would have to go over there to defend our freedom. |
painting targets with lasers is old technology...it's all satellites now.

by paint they mean shoot hellfire missiles at it :)
|
SAS members are indeed already "working" on the ground, well at least I was told.
|
The laser targeting is usually dont from a Helicopter or if they have assets on the ground. But thats not as often.

A major improvement to the Tomahawk is its network-centric warfare-capabilities, using data from multiple sensors (aircraft, UAVs, satellites, foot soldiers, tanks, ships) to find its target. It will also be able to send data from its sensors to these platforms. It will be a part of the networked force being implemented by the Pentagon.
?Tactical Tomahawk? equips the TLAM with a TV-camera for battlefield observation loitering that allows warfighting commanders to assess damage to the target and to redirect the missile to an alternative target. Additionally the Tactical Tomahawk is able to be reprogrammed in-flight to attack one of 16 predesignated targets with GPS coordinates stored in its memory or to any other GPS coordinates. Also, the missile can send data about its status back to the commander. |
Jack Bauer is there and he is lighting shit up with a homemade laser made from common household materials...but he only has 24 hours DAMNIT!
|
The UK has been running the special forces on the ground thing since this thing started :)

The covert guys go in over the border and no one knows. A friend of the family has a son who is in the military, we know he was a Marine Commando who undergoes some very intense training when not "working". He's a highly trained sniper. He went "missing" before the Afghan invasion, the Iraq invasion and now. He's gone "missing" again. Coincidence or what? I believe the modern planes can set the target for the bombs today. Ground Guided Laser Weapons are an old technology. |

They don't need people on the ground with lasers to paint targets. It's all done by satellite now. However, I'm guessing we have boots on the ground. We had boots on the ground in Iraq a month before anything happened there.
