The game is on in Libya

...the first strikes have been made by French jets and it is being reported that the U.S. will start launching Tomahawks into Libya when night falls.

cherrylula 03-19-2011 11:57 AM

I hope they don't hit any speedbumps.

theking 03-19-2011 12:05 PM

It has been reported that the Canadian Fighter Jets have been sent to deploy over Libya...all six aircraft.

JM-cj 03-19-2011 12:06 PM

Scott McD 03-19-2011 12:09 PM

Kiopa_Matt 03-19-2011 12:34 PM

Looks like Gadhafi pissed off the wrong people. He's fucked now.

You know, somebody in his position, you'd think would realize what's happening and peacefully step down. Maybe give a nice speech giving his gratitude for being able to serve the Libyan people for so long, etc. Then go into exile at some kickass island resort with millions in the bank, and live out a good life.

But nope, he's going to be a cunt about it. Now he's pissed off the world, and will probably either end up dead, or in the Hague. Idiot.

DWB 03-19-2011 12:36 PM

US fires missiles into Libya. It's on.

America... FUCK YA. Coming to save the mother fucking day, yea!

Ummm... no....

Notice how when thousands in say Somalia or Zimbabwe are slaughtered, the world response is generally, "well, we're pretty busy, and our resources are spread really thin. We'll discuss this at a conference in the future."

Then all of a sudden, "What?!? Several hundred died in Libya!?! That's it! Mobilize NATO, and get a US carrier group deployed to the region asap. We're going in boys!".

There are several other countries that are sending over aircraft other than the ones you named...I think even some Arab countries.

You said it was "xclint international diplomacy", and I'm assuming you meant Clinton, right? I was pointing out that it doesn't matter who the US President or administration is. If there's natural resource / corporate interests at stake, the US will be going to war.

PS. Don't kid yourself, this will become a war. It will be impossible to win with NATO forces in the air and rebels on the ground, against the Libyan military. Give it another month, and everyone will agree that a ground invasion is required to liberate the Libyan people.

Africa is a compete wasteland with decades of civil war, strife, starvation, AIDs, governments that barely function... Yet suddenly we are focused on one African country.

Why fucking bother? We can beat Gadhafi into submission a thousand times over. Still not going to solve any problems in Africa.

The top two countries importing oil into the US is - surprise - Canada and Mexico. Libya produces two percent of the world's oil, and nearly all of that goes to Europe.

I disagree. NATO forces in the air will destroy the Libyan military, the Libyan military without it's tanks and airplanes is utterly worthless.

and i'm not convinced this will become war. there's simply no reason to start making assumptions/conclusions like that at this early point in the crisis.

I suspect their military will begin to desert or switch to the other side.

It is being reported that as many as 110 Tomahawks will be launched.

Whats with everybody here not remembering the US operations in Somalia in 1993?

And then Haiti in 1994?

Oh yeah and Bosnia in 1996.

I guess its just not fun to point fingers at us for those operations.

You can't hate on America for getting involved in this. I mean, this is a situation where the people are calling for, and actually need, the support of the free world. I'm sure America would have loved to sit this one out, but in doing so it would have kind of fucked their whole "fighting for freedom" angle.

I love the handful of Americans screaming that they should just let the other countries deal with this. You dumb cunts. :1orglaugh Just goes to show even the average American doesn't actually give a fuck about anyone's freedom, just the revenge they've been rallied around in the Middle East.

PStarks 03-19-2011 08:36 PM

At the end of the day it is just one horrible thing that happens in a world FULL of horrible things. Very sad, but also VERY true...

Wonder if UN - NATO - US will intervene in Bahrain where protesters are targetted by the royal family and the SAUDI army ...

Oups, SAUDIS are good so in Bahrain ( as in Yemen ) protesters are labelled " insurgents ", but in Libya they are " freedom fighters " ...

So funny to see history unfolding ....

I just hope Gaddafi goes down fast, instead of a long drawn out battle with tons of unnecessary deaths. At this point, he's just fighting for principle, not because he has even a remote chance of winning.

More people getting slaughtered in the name of BIG BUSINESS. Always the same fuckin bullshit about how we have to rescue people from some nasty old dictator in the name of freedom and democracy...what a load of shit. Like all wars this is about raping someone else country and stealing their assets.. I just feel sorry for all the people on BOTH sides that will die here.

Too quick to jump the gun on the "raping and pillaging" aspect. They don't have any more to gain from Libya than anyone else, or they would have been right in there day one. I really don't think they wanted shit to do with Libya. All the America participation here boils down to is not looking like a bunch of cunts for not getting involved. If you want to run around bombing the fuck out of everyone claiming to be the world's protectors of freedom, it's kind of a step in the wrong direction to stand down when there's actually a freedom fight going down. :2 cents:

This is just the start, it always starts this way, they will keep finding excuses to eventually occupy the country and rape its assets as they always do. Think about it, how did these Rebels get millions and millions of dollars worth of military equipment to start this? You dont buy anti-aircraft missiles in a corner store....and even then someone has to teach you how to use these things and that takes months of training.
And let me ask you this, if a group of people in France or Britain armed themselves with millions of dollars of weapons and started bombing and shooting people and shooting down planes and did all this in the name of "Freedom and Democracy", what do you think the governments of these countries would do? Hand over power to these terrorists because they call themselves democracy protesters or do you think they might actually send in the military the same as Gaddaffi has done.

It is now being reported that the Tomahawks were successful and the no fly zone is now active.

B2 Bombers flew from the CONUS and dropped 40 bombs...reportedly on runways...and have returned to the CONUS.

There have been zero reports of Lybian fighter aircraft taking to the skies so their air power now appears to be non-existent.

I would suspect that any jets they may have are from a military pilot changing sides.

i thought the same but then wondered how would the pilots tell each other apart up there? i don't avionics could do that. i would also think the airport/facility have to change sides for this to happen as well, not out of the question.

another answer- the *organized* rebels are not from libya.

pretty interesting when you think about it eh.

i'm sure there has to be some reason we have for buying aircraft that have been designed for tough conditions
