Banks in Sweden now charges $250+ to cash a check?

I was going to cash some checks today and my bank told me that it wasn't worth it because it could end up costing me more to cash it than the check was worth ($1100). They couldn't tell me exactly how much...

So I walked into another bank and they told me they charged $250 per check to cash them.

What the fuck is going on? Is there any bank left in Sweden without these ridiculous fees?

Agent 488 03-18-2011 11:10 AM

adapt or die.

Ross 03-18-2011 11:18 AM

That's ridiculous, you'd be best switching to wire.

Puremeds-J 03-18-2011 11:42 AM

thats insane!

tranza 03-18-2011 11:49 AM

I feel your pain. After taxes and fees I usually end up with 50% of the original value of the checks down here in Brazil.

It sucks.

:(

Emil 03-18-2011 11:51 AM

That was $250 as minimum, it could cost up to $475.

I'll be looking for a new bank but there isn't that many to choose from in Sweden.

Chris 03-18-2011 12:16 PM

...And people still question why there is a use for prepaid cards :)

klinton 03-18-2011 12:18 PM

I invite you to Poland - flight ticket - around 50 usd, giving check to incaso -> 10 dollars.:1orglaugh

I am not sure about knowledge of the banks' clerks anyway, I am currently waiting 2 months for my incaso check to get cleared....:1orglaugh

you have to go back to get money from that check so it's another 50 usd flight tickets...

you save= 150 $ :1orglaugh

MaDalton 03-18-2011 02:31 PM

czech banking fees are ridiculus but for checks it's actually not that bad - like $6 or so

epagos 03-18-2011 02:34 PM

USA rules

borked 03-18-2011 02:35 PM

is this your own bank or a walk in bank? I could imagine that from a walk in but not your own bank...
for non-european cheques, I get hammered with €15 + charges of 1% max €10.

Dirty Dane 03-18-2011 02:38 PM

Sucks with small checks.

andrej_NDC 03-18-2011 02:43 PM

Why do you live in a country where taxes eat up most of your income, anyway...

why - because we have 2011 and they're still using checks as probably last country on this planet?

rowan 03-18-2011 06:33 PM

Do you actually have accounts with the banks you tried, and some history? Sounds like they might be quoting you high fees based on their perceived risk of handling that cheque for you...

How come you're not doing a wire for such a relatively high value?

FWIW, HSBC (in Australia) charge me 0.25% of the amount with an AUD10 (pretty close to USD10 right now) minimum fee.

next time wear your radiation suit ! they will waive the fee :thumbsup

The Heron 03-18-2011 07:06 PM

That just seems insane to me, what the hell

u-Bob 03-18-2011 07:26 PM

The US is probably the only country left in the entire world that still uses checks.

"I didn't know people still used those."

I'm going to move, that's the masterplan. I just need to save up some money first and get a stable income, shit goes up and down all the time. $400 on day, $40 the next.

I pay about $20, which is still ridiculous if you ask me; in South Africa the banks used to charge me about $5 and transfer the money in my bacnk account 2-3 days later, over here you pay $20 and wait at least a month

Checks are very old fashioned and still easily to be frauded - wires are so easy these days.

seeandsee 03-19-2011 04:39 AM

Wtf!!!! i pay 1.5%

k0nr4d 03-19-2011 05:10 AM

FeelMyTube 03-19-2011 05:25 AM

checks are awfull, they take a long time to arrive, you have to go out to the bank, you have to pay to deposit tem.

No idea why people love them some much in the US. just use wires instead..

respect 03-19-2011 05:32 AM

i got some renegade checks from AFF lately wich i didnt cashed, checks are around 2 months old, amounts of 300 and 200, to cash them will cost 50Euros per check wich i am not gonna pay plus 2 months to wait to be cleared.
Will contact them in a month or so to resend the money by alternative methods
I also got a 51$ that went in the garbage as soon as i seen it :(

CamTraffic 03-19-2011 05:55 AM

that blows... change ur min payment to 3 k that will hurt less

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 03-19-2011 06:10 AM

It's not quite as extreme here, but I had a couple small checks in Euros before that got completely gobbled up by fees. Anything under 100 Euros I'm pretty much getting $0 out of. Wound up just setting my minimum payout on those programs way up. Pretty fucking lame. The banks are such a god damn scam. Everywhere...

Because in the US it isn't like that. You wait at most a week from when they are actually sent to receive them in the mail and usually you do not have to pay a penny to cash them. Most banks give you access to the funds the very next day. We have ACH (sort of like a wire but usually free for the receiver) but the primary advantage of that is merely that you get funds up to a week faster and you do not have to deposit checks. Checks aren't that bad here. Much better than wires (costs) but not as good as ACH.

Denny 03-19-2011 06:17 AM

Damn, that sucks.

Chosen 03-19-2011 08:31 AM

It was one of the reasons people used ePass and now using Paxum and other systems...

brassmonkey 03-19-2011 08:53 AM

You can live from those $40 in some places in Carribean...on the good days, you can save the rest then. :)

CaptainWolfy 03-19-2011 11:06 AM

In all my life I have never experienced any fraud associated with any check I dealt with, incoming or outgoing. And they are free to cash here.
