Do you play a musical instrument?

I'm sure this board is full of skin flute players, bad singers and air guitar players of course but I was curious to know how many musical people we have with us?

I have played guitar for the greater portion of my life, have just started up learning piano and soon the trumpet...

FlexxAeon 03-16-2011 12:43 PM

been producing for years... not sure if samplers count as an instrument - i've heard varying arguments. also play a little piano and trumpet as well

PR_Glen 03-16-2011 12:44 PM

It's something you make music with so I would say it fits the definition...

L-Pink 03-16-2011 12:46 PM

I have no musical ability at all. :Oh crap

i played in a band for 10 years - bass and keyboards. not really successful but we released one CD and the biggest audience we ever had was like 1000 people (not just us playing though)

Played professionally for many years when I was younger. Toured the USA playing bass guitar. Took lessons from Billy Sheehan, Stu Hamm, Tim Bogert and a big funky black guy named "Cat Daddy" who played with James Brown for a bit. Went to Musicians Institute. But don't play so much these days, just tinker with my acoustic guitar.

Of everything, learned the most from Cat Daddy. That was the greasiest, funkiest negro you've ever seen in your life, but he really taught me about groove, playing in the pocket and what "the one" was all about. He lived upstairs from me for about a year, always had a bunch of other greasy jerry curl negros over, everyone jamming. Some played with James Brown, some with George Clinton, two of them with Prince. It was nothing short of amazing to witness such awesomeness and learn from them.

If I could go back in time in my life, that's where I'd go.

Before porn I built custom drum sets and guitars for a minute... play both, but not well. More stress relief and neighbor behavior modification.

I used to write/sing in a band years back

Played piano, organ & or Synths since I was 5

Been TRYING to learn Guitar off and on for YEARS but my hands just can't seem to get proper positioning, so I open tune the strings and it SOUNDS like I know what I'm doing lol.

Also, I can NOT read a lick of music, everything is played by ear (and anyone who hears me play keys says that's not possible lol)

Billy Sheehan was definitely one of my heroes - but also Marcus Miller and Flea :)

Took piano lessons as a child along with most of my brothers. Played trumpet in band for one year. Played guitar since oh I guess a bit over 30 yrs, never professionally. I dont have the right fingers for it really though, especially my left index finger which was injured but it doesnt hurt usually so screw it.

PR_Glen 03-16-2011 01:11 PM

Some good stories in here.. I find it very relaxing. I've always been shy to play in front of people however. Something I need to work on i guess.

gotta arch those fingers more, if you use the flat side of the finger as opposed to the point of the finger it interferes with the other strings, give that a shot ;) Don't need to read music for guitar these days, everything can be learned with tabs and chord charts... wish there was an equivalent for piano hehe but i figured I had to learn reading music some day anyway.

I have 3 guitars, and can play just well enough to make most people think I'm decent. If I sat down to jam with serious musicians, I'd probably get laughed at.

had to man.. would have had 6 or 7 of those and it would have killed the thread... hehe

oh I took vocal lessons for a year as well... I guess that counts.

I was concerned about picking up a new instrument being the age I am wondering if it was too late. I found out that my grandfather, who recently just passed, only started playing the organ when he was 40 years old and he was an amazing player. Had a kick ass wuhrlitzer too. So i figure i still have a few years left to learn some new ones ;)

I'm Hone minus drums/percussion LOL. Just played piano much longer, still play sometimes.

scuba steve 03-16-2011 02:39 PM

just got a keyboard, trying to learn. not terribly hard, more about dedicating time. wish i had taken lessons little. i think its one of those things you hate and don't wanna do but then you get older and wish you had...

i started taking piano lessons last year and had the same age concerns as well. especially when i would go to class and see/hear preteens busting out classical pieces while i'd be plunking away at mary had a little lamb :1orglaugh

puZcash 03-16-2011 04:12 PM

Nicky 03-16-2011 04:26 PM

Been playing guitar for ~12 years.

DangerX !!! 03-16-2011 04:38 PM

Yeah, I play some instruments from time to time when necessary.

WebairGerard 03-16-2011 04:44 PM

Been playing guitar for many, many years. Just recently started formal Classical guitar training with hopes of learning some flamenco too. Very humbling thus far! But very enjoyable too! :)

yeah that's what i have been avoiding, I'm not going to take lessons until i work it a bit on my own. It's the same way i learned guitar really.. I didn't start off with happy birthday i bought a redhot chilipeppers tab book and worked with that. Was hard as shit to start there but at least i loved it enough to want to learn more. With piano i'm working with fats domino stuff. rhythm and blues piano is pretty simple really, i guess it helps when you understand how chords are made already though..

ShellyCrash 03-16-2011 09:05 PM

I sung in a few bands in my day. Nothing major, no 7"s to speak of.

I also play bass but I haven't played in a few years so I almost want to say I "played" bass, but it's not like you forget. I'm decent, I'm not awesome.

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 03-16-2011 09:08 PM

I've been known to jump in the odd drum circle after eating a fuck ton of shrooms. Does that count?

yeah learning a bit on your own can help get you through that initial awkward phase. since i had studied music in school and in choir i already knew theory a bit. instructor didn't have to teach me where middle C was or the scale so he was able to throw me into the harder stuff pretty quickly. the book he had me buy was Adult Piano Adventures (Faber) it's good for starting out on your own.
