Dramatic video of the destruction in Japan

:( Just horrible.

LiveDose 03-14-2011 07:48 AM

It's hard to believe that's real every time you see it...

CaptainHowdy 03-14-2011 08:05 AM

That's for Pearl Harbor ... and Ringu 2.

Evil Chris 03-14-2011 08:33 AM

Near the end, you can see a few cars speeding away from the oncoming waves. Damn.

I saw that at 3:33, one guy was speeding for his life and others just stood still. Wonder if the guyy made it to safety.

dyna mo 03-14-2011 09:03 AM

mindblowing video but as you can see in the vid and from several locations, the tsunami is not a wall of water as the press continues to describe it.

Yea, wonder if he made it and what percentage of the cars being swept along had passengers.

AzteK 03-14-2011 09:21 AM

It may eventually come out. if he made it he may see the video and know it was him.

Really sad to see all that.

Evil Chris 03-14-2011 10:38 AM

Anyone else think about hurricane Katrina in comparison?

This has got to be like 100x Katrina.

AVstudio2011 03-14-2011 10:57 AM

Really sad...

DWB 03-14-2011 12:01 PM

I watched that live on NHK when it was going down. Totally floored. I don't know if any of you get that station where you are but they still have some amazing footage coming in.

DWB 03-14-2011 12:09 PM

This one is amazing. Talk about not having a chance...

If you look at :47 on this one, there are 2 cars driving towards the water. RIP.

Evil Chris 03-14-2011 12:47 PM

That second clip is absolutely brutal.

i'm looking at the video.

here, i will break it down for you.

17 seconds in until 1:25, that's not a wall. that water is 3-4 feet deep/tall. hardly a wall.

2:00-->end. not a wall, ~3-4' deep. hardly a wall.

so, let's see, ~3:30 of that 4:20 minute video is of the leading edge of the tsunami clearing showing it is 3-4 feet of water.

not sure what you were looking at.

dyna mo 03-14-2011 01:59 PM

not a wall of water.

i'd say it's gotta be something like that, also heard a helicopter that is distorted from compression?

thing with the errant gas tank theory is why does it continue to sprout that white stuff, and why does it looked controlled?

So tell us dyna mo, what is your definition of a "wall" of water? 4 feet? 10 feet? 100 feet?

that definition is freely available on the internet.

i could be immersed in it and it would not change the fact that water is 3-4' deep.

High enough to park boats on dry land? 3,430 News references to Japanese Tsunami as "wall of water"

"In the midst of all the death and destruction left in the wake of the 30-foot wall of water that ravaged northern Japan Friday, there was at least one piece of good news. A boat swept away in the tsunami caused by the 8.9 magnitude quake and feared lost at sea has been found with all aboard alive, Jiji Press reported." >Source NY Daily News<

quoting the news simply reinforces my point that the term is misused. if you haven't realized yet that the news organizations are over-sensationalizing this story to the nth degree, i can't help you.

the pictures and video speak for themselves

don't worry about me, you seem overly concerned with my views. i can't help it if you are not capable of seeing how the media is over-sensationalizing the story with over-the-top reporting. it's bad enough as it is.

ha ha I love a good debate!

Your point is that perception is subjective. Point taken :thumbsup

what's your opinion on how deep the water is in this picture at the bottom right? where you can clearly see the cars and such?
and does that fall within your definition of a wall?

My perception is that three feet of water didn't do this. The average height in Japan is 1.715 meters. What is a wall to them might not be to me.

3 feet of water did not do that. obviously, the water level increased dramatically and quickly to the levels (30' in places) that caused that sort of destruction. but as you can see by the pictures, the leading edge was no wall of water that moved ships like that.

You are viewing the term "wall" incorrectly. It isn't the height of the water that is important, but the width. And the width of that water more than qualifies as a wall of water.

so if i run a piece of ribbon across a room, that ribbon is a wall because it has width. incorrect.
