How to make a high CTR banner

Anyone want to share their tips/tricks? I can't think of anything better than a banner that looks like 4-5 video thumbs with the video time length inside each thumb. Animation usually isn't good because the surfer will know it's a banner and not a column of images.

What's the best way to get a nice CTR with text only and without resorting to nude images?

I can, but not in public. You can ICQ me if you want, 1566665.

Do something that people never see in banner ads.

I find comedy works well. But essentially get creative.

What is the product you're advertising and where are you buying the ads, with that info I'll come up with a couple of thoughts for ya.

Make 5, see which works best, repeat.

ya do split testing ;)

interesting thread.

post your opinions and experiences.

my opinion and practice is that i don't use banners at all, especially the ones provided by the sponsors so i rather make my own graphic in custom size and don't use the actual word "banner" anywhere, from filename to foldername since that way it doesn't get blocked by various ad blockers.

Split testing is the only way to know. There's no way to tell beforehand. Different things work for different traffic sources, and different demographics, in different niches. Make a batch of a dozen, run them for a week or so. Clip out the ones that are obviously performing weak. Look at the 3 that are performing the best, try and replicate the features that you think are generating the clicks with so variety, toss them into the mix and see how they perform. Wash, rinse, and repeat. Keep narrowing it down until you have a small batch that perform well.

Don't just watch CTR. Your banner can affect the resulting conversion ratio too. You may have a lower CTR, but perform better for the entire conversion path. :2 cents:

Yeah split testing is basically what I've been doing, something resembling a row of video thumbs seems to kick any other kind of banners ass hands down.

If you're buying on CPM or outright buying placements for set time periods, that's all good. If you're paying per click, consider that you might be paying for clicks that aren't any good to you this way. People click expecting videos and get something totally different. Depends how you're working things I guess.

Be creative and smart

Put something eye unfriendly, controversial and questionable on it, make sure it has vivid colors and is moving.
