Breaking news : Japanese nuclear reactor exploded

What a horrible mess. Looks like it's like going to be Chernobyl.
Watch CNN now.

Michael O 03-12-2011 01:34 AM

[3:08 a.m. ET, 5:08 p.m. Tokyo] An explosion has been reported near a nuclear plant in northeastern Japan's Fukushima prefecture, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported, citing the country's nuclear and industrial safety agency.

BJ 03-12-2011 01:38 AM

watching on NHK live now, they show before and after pictures with one building totally gone

HEAT 03-12-2011 01:38 AM

I'm watching on NHK
They say a whole plant dome is just collapsed.

Michael O 03-12-2011 01:41 AM

Yeah :s
and cooling systems are failing and great danger of one reactor overheating.

One hour of radiation there is equal to a 1 years of normal radiation.

Michael O 03-12-2011 01:45 AM

wow `30 generators for backup and ALL 30 failed due to the quake.
How difficult can it be to bring in more generators?

Before and after

Do the Japanese have a contingency plan for this scenario?

WTF!?

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 03-12-2011 01:59 AM

Years of movies have taught me to never trust anything that mutates in Japan. Prepare for war...

Michael O 03-12-2011 02:26 AM

Clip of the explosion

loreen 03-12-2011 02:48 AM

One expert said the explosion was "clearly a serious situation," but may not be related to problems inside the plant's nuclear reactor.

Other effects of the tsunami may have caused the blast, said Malcolm Grimston, associate fellow for energy, environment and development at London's Chatham House.

"It's clearly a serious situation, but that in itself does not necessarily mean major (nuclear) contamination," he said.

Jack Sparrow 03-12-2011 02:50 AM

Near. Near they said.

They did say near, but from watching that clip I'd say they're playing on semantics. 1m away is "near" too.

noxious gas just exploded near my nutsack...

Where was this from?

BJ 03-12-2011 03:40 AM

Have a japanese person at my work now, he is saying that if it is a true meltdown, it will eventually hit the water table causing a massive nuclear bomb style blast.

GatorB 03-12-2011 03:41 AM

I wonder what all the pro-nuclear politicians in the US think about building more reactors now?

Machete_ 03-12-2011 03:42 AM

So much for that "clean, safe power" theory. BBC trying to play it down, and failing.

When I was young and protesting at Diablo Canyon, this is exactly the scenario we were trying to illustrate. There is no such thing as a "fail safe" sytem with that kind of energy.

Yes. There's radiation seeping into your body, and mutating your cells as you read this. You're going to have 16 fingers, and an 80lbs foot soon. :)

Explosion at Japan nuclear plant caused by "water vapor" from cooling process, not the nuclear reactor, government says.

This is a disaster of course, but in reality nuclear power is much safer than just about all other forms of energy. Oil pollutes much more, and kills tens of thousands of people every year. There have been very few deaths due to nuclear power.

yeah, only about 200,000 who died from cancer and other radiation related diseases over the last 25 years in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Not counting the children that died during pregnancy or were born with deformations. and not counting the other 200,000 who are still sick and need regular treatment. :error
