Japan hit by Tsunami

after 8.9 earthquake offshore...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598

wow - boats, cars, houses floating by under the bridge....

worst wave yet to come? Must be the effect of the moon....

borked 03-11-2011 12:14 AM

nm, I see the GFY ticker is already alive on this one

DWB 03-11-2011 12:20 AM

What is odd is, they did put out a warning about the moon. But that isn't until the 19th or something, but still creepy to think about.

This is a HUGE quake.

That's like seeing black cat cross your path then have something bad happen later that day then blaming it on the cat.

The Ghost 03-11-2011 12:35 AM

Been watching the coverage... epic disaster. :(

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 03-11-2011 12:37 AM

Scientists did say the moons closeness could cause issues. Cats don't.

I'm saying that is why this happened, I'm just saying it's odd timing.

JustDaveXxx 03-11-2011 01:05 AM

WOW!! Epic!!!

sponsorpimp 03-11-2011 01:14 AM

No, I don't think so.
The moon can make an earthquake happen - acting like the 'last drop that fills the glass" but it can't produce it all together.

plsureking 03-11-2011 01:39 AM

some massive damage. i wonder what the body count will be.

adultforum 03-11-2011 01:41 AM

There are all day long earthquakes in that area.

loreen 03-11-2011 01:41 AM

Probably not a huge number, they now it's a seismic zone and have build accordingly.

Then you can expect some earthquakes :)
Depends on the exact zone, tough.

Tanker 03-11-2011 02:22 AM

The wave covered an airport 2KM inland

Tanker 03-11-2011 02:25 AM

No they didn't say that. Slightly higher tides is about it. Oh and it'll be a bit brighter outside at night.

They're saying sea levels are expected rise less than a foot off the coast of California. Nothing like what hit Japan. Nature is so unpredictable and powerful, every time disasters like this happen it's a harsh reminder that we are always at it's mercy.

Lykos 03-11-2011 03:35 AM

Jesus...i hope not many ppl died:(

While I usually do like to rely on GFY and pornographers for real information and facts, this time I looked elsewhere for info. But what do these stupid fucks know?

?The last extreme super moon occurred was on January 10th, 2005, right around the time of the 9.0 Indonesia earthquake. That extreme super moon was a new moon. So be forewarned. Something BIG could happen on or around this date. So what can we expect this time? Earthquakes? Volcanic eruptions? I guess we can only wait and see.? - AccuWeather.com

At times of full and new moons, "you see a less-than-1-percent increase in earthquake activity, and a slightly higher response in volcanoes." - Space.com
I'm not saying this is the reason, I'm saying you can't rule it out. Keeping in mind that scientists just learned the universe is three times the size they thought it once, you have to take it all at face value and acknowledge no one really knows much. Other than pornographers of course. You guys know everything. Not sure why most of you are even wasting your time in this business when you could be working for NASA or the government.

Saw the bridge video on CNN with houses, boats and cars going under it.. Wow. What's really incredible is to think that that's only ONE camera, watching ONE bridge..Such a very small focal point of the larger event.

nikki99 03-11-2011 05:51 AM

bbc news are better than cnn for this

Caligari 03-11-2011 06:07 AM

An earthquake of 8.9 magnitude should be setting off alarm bells, check out this list-

1 01960-05-22May 22, 1960 Valdivia, Chile 1960 Valdivia earthquake 9.5
2 01964-03-27March 27, 1964 Prince William Sound, USA 1964 Alaska 9.2
3 02004-12-26December 26, 2004 Sumatra, Indonesia 9.1
4 01952-11-04November 4, 1952 Kamchatka, Russia 9.0 [1]
5 01868-08-13August 13, 1868 Arica, Chile earthquake 9.0 [2]
6 01700-01-26January 26, 1700 Cascadia earthquake 9.0
7 02011-03-11March 11, 2011 Japan 8.9

then according to this list of largest earthquakes this earthquake is the 7th largest in recorded history...

and notice that 5 of the 7 largest earthquakes have happened in the last 60 years or so.

granted that is in recorded history but on a geological timeline that is like seconds apart.

these huge 8 plus quakes are all over the place now-

and if you go to the top 20 biggest earthquakes in this chart, 13 of the last 20 have occured since 1950 and the timeline goes back to 1575.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_earthquakes

cannot believe the video i am seeing of this quake, hopefully they will not have many big aftershocks.

"The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan since records began" - that's interesting. This earthquake caused a very powerful tsunami. What a serious nature event!

Japan is considered one of the most earthquake prepared nation in the world.... Just goes to show you can never be really ready :(

Redrob 03-11-2011 08:20 AM

Problems at a nuclear power plant causing evacuations, many home are burning and at least one major oil refinery is on fire. Long term results....dollar will strengthen compared to yen and price of gas will drop a little as Japan bound oil is redirected to other countries.
