Those electric splitters are usually pretty crappy to be honest, known a few people to get them basically for the same reason as you ,knotty wet wood , and they suck. Much quicker to just do it the old fashioned way. You could also hire someone to split the wood. Or another popular option is to make a deal with a firewood company, they split it for a percentage of the wood. |

Definitely go for gas powered. The electric ones suck. Rather than buy one, I usually end up renting for a day or two from the local Home Depot. High end one is usually about $60/day, and worth every penny.

2 old guys live up on a hill, Walter and Fred. Fred sees Walter out back stacking up 10 cords of uncut wood behind his garage.
Concerned Fred rushes to the phone, and calls the local Sheriff. "Sheriff Taylor, I'm watching Walter hide marijuana in his back yard right now, he's hid it inside his firewood, like right inside the logs! It's behind his garage". Moments later, several cruisers and police department vehicles show up at Walter's house, and Fred watches as they rummage through all of his freshly stacked, uncut wood. Sheriff Taylor motions over his crew and tells them it the dope has to be in there, and orders the men to split all the wood until they find the hidden marijuana. After about 3 hrs and after every log has been split, Fred watches the Police pack it in, and leave, he grabs his coat and crosses the street. "Hey Walter, you old fuck, I see the cops were just here, they cut up all your wood?" "Yeah" "Happy Birthday Buddy" |
That things got to be pullin alot of juice...you might as well heat your house with electric instead of using it to cut wood and start a fire:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

as had been said before , if you are getting one, go for the gas ones, the electrics suck. I am not so sure if its worth it though.
Up here I am buying a bush cord 16"for $320, cut and seasoned. They are all ready to burn, the odd one you will have to split, but its not worth buying a splitter for that small amount. Beware of buying wood this time of yr , unless they are stored indoors, they are wet and useless :winkwink: |
I have used gas ones before. No question, they rock. The thing is, I am not going through wood like I used to, so it would be overkill.
The ramsplitter seems interesting. Will have to check more reviews. I have heard Jdoughs story before. Maybe I will try that one. |
My 67 year old mother splits wood with a maul a wedge and a sledge hammer. I use a maul. Put the log on a sliced section of digger pine and as I hit the log give the handle a little twist. Splits the logs pretty easy. But its oak I usually split . Better than going to the gym. Have a cheap log splitter we got at habour frieght that's gas when we want to split green wood

Furnace here goes off at midnight mon-thurs and 2am fri/sat/sun and doesn't come back on till 6am. Why heat the house when you sleep? Plus I hate a bedroom that's anything >19oC |

I was not exaggerating when I said I have split tons of firewood. |
Not sure if you have a tractor or not.. but the 3 Pt Hitch models are less than $700. Or Im sure that there are some used ones on Kijiji or craigslist
