98 to XP Question

I am uprgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home Edition. When I run the install the only option it gives me is a new install (advanced), will I lose any info on my computer after the install?

Thanks in advance

stanton 01-19-2003 09:01 PM

If you want a stable system follow the above advice. Backup and reinstall. Otherwise you will repent many times over.

Then stay on 98
NEVER upgrade..... always format and do it fresh.

Amen. The man knows.

Just do a backup on CDs.

Now THAT is the funniest thing I've heard all night!!

XP installed on a fresh drive is the most stable way to run! I've been running XP pro for almost a year now without a glitch. Faster and more user friendly. No such thing as locking up and loosing info anymore. If something freezes, you can close it and continue running all other apps. Also, if you install a bad driver for something, you can roll back with system restore.

WinXP is #1

How do I save all the shit on my harddrive? Partition? Burn to CD?

PenetratinP 01-19-2003 10:30 PM

Definitely burn to Cd. Partitioning is a pain in the ass.

1. burn all yer files, mp3, movies, pics, etc to cd.
2. make a note of all your necessary programs and logins/passwords.
3. make sure you have the cd or the download location for every vital accessory or program.
4. format away...definitely get xp pro...

I format my desktop/laptop every 6 months or so just to keep them fresh and running fast. You'd be amazed how buggy and dirty a computer can get from installing random programs when I'm working on new projects.

Buzz_Aziani 01-19-2003 10:31 PM

Your right, Fresh install, Im building a new one right now. XP always gives me shit when I install it, but when it is done it rocks

Thanks bro. It was nice meeting you in Vegas. Still can't get your fucking name right though.

PornoDoggy 01-19-2003 10:51 PM

Burn to CD, by all means. I was doing a reinstall on '98 every 6-8 weeks. I installed XP on this jive ass piece of shit Compaq one year and two weeks ago and haven't had a significant problem yet.

damac 01-19-2003 11:03 PM

I would go with formatting fresh and installing xp as well.

I have noticed on numerous family computers xp being more stable. For example a single app crashing and not bringing down the whole system.

Plus in all these months of using it I have had one lockup with icq, all the other apps and games have worked perfectly.

And based on all the sources I have seen I think xp is considered more stable than win98.

Sometimes people just have bad luck with configurations and are fucked though. Parts don't agree for whatever reason.

emailtrader 01-19-2003 11:17 PM

:thumbsup Win XP Pro

:ak47: Win XP Home

Simple as that :glugglug

but as everyone else has said, either format and install or dont bother, its certainly the best way!

never ever ever ever upgrade from win9x to XP you silly bastard!

I will suggest something I do. Whenever a new OS comes out I buy a new uber large HD for it.. brand new.. that way I dont have to remember to burn everything and I can always use the extra space.

Go buy a brand new drive and slap it in your system. Install XP pro ( home is for mini van driving bitches ) and away you go!

-fatmonkey

P.S. the only bad thing about buying drives is you get addicted.. I had all these different drives of different size ( 30 gig, 20 gig, 40 gig ) and then I bought a 80.. well it bugged me that all my drives were different size so I went and bought 6 80gig seagates to replace everything.. booya!

now I think I might have too much space :(

emailtrader 01-19-2003 11:51 PM
